Becoming a better listener is a talent, like any other, that can be developed through practice. The more involved one becomes in the process of listening, the better one can understand, prioritize and interrelate the concepts presented.

Tips to becoming a better listener in the classroom:
Active listeners focus on what the speaker is saying.
They try to find the important details, and ask themselves questions like "How does this relate to what we talked about yesterday or to what I read in the textbook?"
They think of personal examples that relate to what the speaker is saying.
They picture scenes being described, or draw diagrams in their notes for clarification.
They ask questions and participate in class discussion How do teacher know? - it doesn't sound like "you"

If your teacher gives you the notes before class, print them off so you can highlight and write on them. Settlement began in the Ottawa valley in 1800 when Philemon Wright brought his family and several other American settlers to present-day Hull at Chaudiere Falls. At this site, across the Ottawa River from the future site of Ottawa, Wright intended to develop an agriculture settlement. However, it was the timber industry that developed. Wright managed to successfully send rafts of lumber all the way to Montreal and Quebec for export, in spite of the falls and rapids, proving it was possible. Lumbering remained the chief industry for many years. When John Graves Simcoe, the first lieutenant-governor of Upper Canada, arrived in the colony in 1792, very few people were living in towns. Simcoe established the first capital at Newark (now Niagara on the lake). He soon decided Newark was too near American territory. In 1793 he planned out a town on the shore of Lake Ontario. Local Native people called the place Toronto. This place seemed well suited for defense and transportation. In 1796, the settlement, renamed York, became the colony's new capital.
