Transcript of Understanding Worldliness: Thinking Differently

Be Reminded of the Essence of the World
Understand the Interaction of the World and the Believer
Lust of the Flesh
Lust of the Eyes
Ephesians 4:17

“Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds.”
The Pride of Life
Ephesians 4:20-24

“20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!—21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”
Be Reminded of the Gospel
Salvation is the call to die to the World
Luke 18:22-24

“22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 23 But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich. 24 Jesus, looking at him with sadness, said, “How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!”
Matthew 16:24-26

“24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his life?”
Matthew 6:24

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”

“The Christians are not distinguished from other men by country, by language, nor by civil institutions. For they neither dwell in cities by themselves, nor use a peculiar tongue, nor lead a singular mode of life. They dwell in the Grecian or Barbarian cities, as the case may be; they follow the usage of the country in dress, food, and the other affairs of life.”
The Cost of Worldly Thinking about Worldliness
Colossians 2: We didn't actually help anyone be holy

Matthew 7: We encouraged Easy-believism and works based righteousness

Romans 6-8: We didn't equip people rightly to deal with their flesh

John 17: We didn't put the glory of Christ on display in a rightly loving way toward one another due to factions about standards of worldliness

Ephesians 5: We were not purified or ruled by Christ but by human reasoning

Hebrews 5: We inhibited the normative maturity process of Believers

Matthew 23: We actually created a strong Pharisaical bent in our teaching and focus
Fulfilling God-given desires by illicit means
Worshiping the Gift instead of the Giver
An assault on the truth and character of God that demands a demonstration that we are better than we are and deserve better than we are getting
There is Universal Worldliness
There is Specific Worldliness
Satan is at work to carefully construct a world system intended to appeal to our lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride of life and there are some things that are universally true for all people.
Matthew 5:29-30

“29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.”
