Description Wheat is an edible grass that can grow in all seasons
It is grown from a seed called a kernel
It is used for making food (bread & pasta), baskets, wheat starch, and livestock feed
The two classifications of wheat are spring wheat and winter wheat
Winter wheat is planted in the winter and spring wheat is planted in the spring
Different types of wheat are Common Wheat, Club Wheat, and Durum Wheat
Species- Triticum Aestivum
Family- Poacea (grass family) Where it is Found in Canada In Canada, wheat is found in the western Prairie region (Saskatchewan, Alberta)
Wheat grows best in dry and mild climates How is Wheat Grown? Farmers prepare the fields by plowing the soil
A tractor-machine called a drill is used to plant the kernel (wheat seed)
When the drill finishes drilling, it forms a hole called a furrow
The drill drops the seed into the furrow and covers it with soil (sometimes fertilizer is dropped in)
While wheat is growing, farmers must protect the wheat from insects and wheat diseases like Rust
Rust is a fungus that grows on wheat and creates small, rust-colored spots on the leaves and stems Who Owns Wheat and How Valuable Wheat is very inexpensive so a lot of countries buy it
