Transcript of Prometheus and Io
-Monica Sucic Prometheus and Io Prometheus and Io meet for the first time
Io = form of a "Heifer, but talked like a girl who seemed mad with misery"
Prometheus = chained to a rock
Both victims of gods' punishments Prometheus recognizes Io as Inachus' daughter
tells Io, "You made the god's heart hot with love and Hera hates you. She it is the one who drives you on this flight that never ends."
After being asked, Prometheus tells his name to Io
Knowing his story, she calls him "the daring, the enduring" Io meets Zeus... Pg. 80 - 81 ~ The Story of Io They share unfair treatment... Io wanders... Setting - The rocky peaks of Caucasus Pgs. 78 - 79 ~ An Indroduction They know each other's stories... They meet for the first time... Both were unfairly treated by the gods (Io mistreated by Zues and Hera, Prometheus mistreated by Zues)
Prometheus stole fire from Olympus to give to humans; Zues chained Prometheus to a rock for all eternity to have his liver picked out by an eagle
Io was a mistress of Zues; Hera turned her into a heifer Prometheus when he was first attacked by the eagle Io tells Prometheus how Zeus tempted her with dreams
Presenting Zeus as the tempter of the myth
Once Zeus takes Io, he tries to hide her from Hera w/ a large cloud
Hera becomes suspicious Zeus gives Io away... Hera comes down from Olympus, only to find a white heifer
Zeus turned Io into the heifer to disguise her
Hera wants the heifer as a gift from Zeus
Zeus knows that Hera would be even more suspicious if he declined...
So he gave her Io
Her made sure to keep Io hidden far from Zeus Hera takes Io away... Io is guarded by Argus, a watchman with 100 eyes
Zeus feels ashamed of himself
He demands that his son, Hermes, kill Argus
Hermes gets Argus to fall asleep by disguising himself and telling Argus a story
Motif: gods disguising themselves to aid mortals
Argus and setting Io free... but Hera plagues Io using a gad fly ...through rivers and seas

Bosporus named after her Io is finally freed! Zeus restores her to her human form after she reached the Nile
