Transcript of Are Video Games Violent?

So what makes video games different from violent movies or violent music? The answer is the interaction. In movies and music the watcher/listener doesn’t have any say in what happens--it has already been decided by the creator. In video games, the player can make a conscious decision that they are going to “kill” a cop or innocent bystander on the street. The player can decide how they want to do it--with their bare hands, with a baseball bat, or with a gun. They can literally stomp someone’s face into the pavement until they stop moving. In the Nintendo Wii game Manhunt 2, users actually simulate the movements of cutting their victims throat with a piece of glass or suffocating them with a plastic bag. On October 13 in London i found an artical that said,"The Norwegian killer is said to have played violent video games before he killed dozens of people in Oslo's government district and on a vacation island of Utoya." Reasons Why Violent Video Games are Bad They are Addictive They are Expensive Can Hurt Relationships Distracting Robs you of Real Life Experinces The video game industry has created many games that promote violence. All of them consist of the same exact violence. Whether it be crashing cars, drinking underage, or killing people randomly. All show illegal actions for underage kids, and make them seem do able.

Study/ Reasearch Finds.... Teachers all over the country have noticed that kids who play karate games, “tend to try out
the moves on friends,” while kids that play violent video games are very aggressive, and
more likely to have arguments and get involved in fights. Young gamers also “tend to imitate
the moves that they just ‘acted out’ in the game.” People who play video games for a scant of
10 min. detect aggressive traits and actions in their own character after hitting the off button.
Teachers have noticed more than 600 students aged 13-14 who play violent video games were more disrespectable. Children who play more violent video games also have decreased prosocial helping according to a scientific study. (Anderson & Bushman, 2001)
A recent study of children in their early teens found out that almost a 3rd played video games daily, and that 7% of kids played for 30 hours a week.
video games affect 4 year old children all the way up to the age of 45. Examples : In the game Call of Duty if you do well in it gives you perks to kill others, the better you do the more people you can kill. . On April20,1999, Eric Harris & Dylan Klebold launched an assault on Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, murdering 13 and wounding 23 before turning the guns on themselves. They don’t know why the boys did that but, they knew they enjoyed playing bloody shoot them up games. For a class project they made a video tape that was similar to their customized version of Doom. In the video they were dressed in trench coats, carried guns, and killed school athletes.
:-)Interesting Facts Violent Video Games can be blamed for many things. School shootings, bullying, and violence towards females have been happening more and more because of these violent games. In 2008, 97% of 12-17 old kids played video games, 10 out of 20 were violent. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, two adult teens in high school opened fire on their very own students. They shot 20 people and killed 13 before being detained. These two students were active violent video gamers. They played games like Mortal Kombat, and Doom, two games right there that instigate killing. Websites Used http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/exchange/node/1723 Did you know that video games have bad effects on some children’s health, including obesity, video induced seizures and postural, muscular and skeletal disorders, such as tendonitis, nerve compression, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Did you know that More and More children suffer from and are being treated for anger management than ever before.
In modern violent video games the bad guys no longer disappear in a cloud of smoke when killed, instead they perform an elaborate maneuver when killed or they come back alive
Have you ever noticed in violent video games how women are
often portrayed as weaker characters that are helpless?
The most expensive video game cost $41,000 Addictive – the definition of additive is “The condition of being habitually or
compulsively occupied with something.” Many of the people that have played video games
has experienced this many times weather they realize it or not. People into video games
usually get on the computer to look for new releases or participate in video game forums.
Then afterwards they start playing.

Expensive- Did you know that the most expensive violent video game ever cost $41,000?
It is not unusual for people that play video games to have 50-100 games that cost $40-$50

Can hurt relationships – In the most extreme case that has occurred was when a couple
that was so consumed with playing video games that they ended up neglecting their 3 kids to
the point where they were malnourished, naked, and covered in their own feces.
Distracting- For gamers reading books, taking care of bills, writing, or mowing their
lawns, ect. are not a priority, when it comes to advancing to the next level or finishing a
game. But, when they finally have the time they are just too tired to work on anything
because, they stayed up late playing games.

Robs you of real life experiences – Instead of hanging around friends, hiking, or doing
something physical, they spent time in their virtual reality. Whereas real life can bear long
lasting friendships, and memories. The memories created in a game are meaningless while
living means; interacting, growing, learning, teaching and loving, none of these things can be
accomplished in video games.

Have you noticed that in many games that kids are being rewarded for being more violent? The child is in control of the violence and experiences the violence with his/ her own eyes like killing, kicking, stabbing & shooting
