Albinism Kellie Cubias What is Albinism ? Albinism means a group of inherited conditions.
People with this disorder have little or no pigment in their skin, eyes, or hair. It also happens to animals Name and origin “ Albinism” came form the personal name Albino or Albin
Originated from Spanish and Italian. Latin word for white How the Disorder is transmitted The disorder cannot be transmitted, but it inherited by the mother or father that carry the trait. Its caused by genes that do not make the usual amounts of a pigment called Melanin. One of the genes are “autosomal” chromosomes, which contain the body characteristics . The chromosome is “recessive trait " Usually ,people with albinism are born from parents who do not have the disorder. Vision Problems Albinos have low vision.
The level of vision varies with the type of albinism they have, mostly people with albinism are “ legally blind”.
However, they use their vision for many task, such as reading, and even driving. Eye problems in albinism result from abnormal development of the eye because of lack of pigment
So the main test for albinism is for an eye examination . Nystagmus- back and forward movement of the eye. Strabismus- muscle imbalance of the eye like crossed eyes or lazy eyes. Photophobia -sensitivity to bright light and glare. Optic nerve misrouting- nerve connection between the brain and the retina are not normal Skin problems People with albinism are very sensitive to the Sun. So they need to avoid sun damage by wearing sunscreen lotions, hats and sun protective clothes. Types of Albinism Oculocutaneous albinism(OCA)- involves the skin, eyes ,and hair. OCA1 , OCA2, OCA3 and OCA4. Ocular albinism (OA)- it only involves changes in the eye while the hair and the skin similar or lighter than the other family members. Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome (HPS)- bleeding and bruising problems Less pigmented and slight pigmented types of albinism. Treatment Eye treatments consists of vision rehabilitation or surgery. Sunglasses or tinted contact lenses. bioptics, glasses which have small telescopes mounted on Skin treatments-sunscreen lotions, hats and sun opaque clothing. Why I choose the Disease I choose Albinism because I meet a person who carry the disorder. Her race was African American, and was judged because her hair was white and had light skin.
