periodic table with oxidation numbers of main group elements
They way to tell if a element is a gas, solid or liquid is seeing which group their in on the periodic table.
Characteristics Of Metals,Non-Metals& Metalloids...
Metals - generally shiny, malleable, and hard. Metals are also good conductors of electricity.
Non-metals -do not conduct heat or electricity very well. Non-metals are typically brittle and are not easily molded into shapes.
Metalloids share characteristics of both metals and non-metals and are also called semimetals. Metalloids are typically semi-conductors, which means that they both insulate and conduct electricity.
.-Trends in atomic radius down a group
It is fairly obvious that the atoms get bigger as you go down groups. The reason is equally obvious - you are adding extra layers of electrons.
Trends in ionic radius down a group

This is the easy bit! As you add extra layers of electrons as you go down a group, the ions are bound to get bigger

Chemistry plays a big role in our lives. Its in the air we breathe , even the food we eat. Chemistry is really around us 24/7 if we think about. Our body has to do with chemistry, also our brains , and emotions. A lot of things would be impossible without chemistry.
How is chemistry apart of our everyday life..
The three main parts of a atom is protons, neutrons, and electrons.
Protons - have a positive charge, located in the nucleus,
Protons and neutrons have nearly the same mass while electrons are much less massive.
Neutrons- Have a negative charge, located in the nucleus.
Electrons- has no charge.
The atomic number of an element is equal to the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom of that element, but a atomic mass is the sum of the numbers of protons and neutrons in the nucleus.
Isotope- each of two or more forms of the same element that contain equal numbers of protons but different numbers of neutrons in their nuclei. Isotopes are used in medicine to diagnose and treat diseases.
example of an element and its isotope , the atomic mass of a normal carbon atom is 12 as it has 6 protons and 6 neutrons in its nucleus. The isotope C-13 also has the same number of protons, i.e. 6, but the number of neutrons is not 6 but 7. This makes the atomic mass 6+7 = 13.
Example of how to find the number of subatomic particles in an isotope by looking at the atomic mass : the atomic mass of chlorine (Cl) is 35.45 because chlorine is composed of several isotopes, some (the majority) with an atomic mass of 35 (17 protons and 18 neutrons) and some with an atomic mass of 37 (17 protons and 20 neutrons).
20 common elements and symbols !
Atomic Number: 2
Symbol: He
Atomic Mass: 4
Protons: 2
Neutrons: 2
Electrons: 2
Number of protons,electrons,and neutrons ..
Sodium- Na Very Reactive
1 valence electron
All have ONE outer electron to lose.
This makes them highly reactive, since they are looking
to combine with another element to become stable and
have that outer level filled and complete (or happy!).
Most reactive of all metals
Soft and can be cut with a knife
Family #1 Alkali Metals !
Labeled Periodic Table
ion -an atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons.
Two types of ions anions and cations.
The anions are the negative ions while cations are the positive charge of the ion.
Elements the can form an ionic compounds..Li, Cl
&. I, Na
What is a chemical bond ?Chemical compounds are formed by the joining of two or more atoms. A stable compound occurs when the total energy of the combination has lower energy than the separated atoms. The bound state implies a net attractive force between the atoms ... a chemical bond.
subscripts are the number of atoms, in this case it means there are 2 Al
superscripts are used for the charge of an ion, like Ca2+ (2+ should be superscript)
