Welcome to the Blue Planet!

In your DSN, draw three columns and label:

Brainstorm all you Know about water in the K column and write what you Want to know in the W column--what questions do you have about water?





Water in 3 forms!
The only substance that is found in all three forms, or phases, in nature. Let's investigate!

First-------> What is it made of??
How do we know the water molecules are there??
(4th grade voice) Write in your DSN what you observe in the demo and how you might explain what is happening.
So how DOES water move on the Earth?

Brainstorm:
Water also moves UP!
QOD: Where do puddles go after the rain stops?

Guiding questions:
What was going on with the water that was boiling in the demo?
What was different about that water and water at room temp?
What would happen if we put a drop of water on the table and on a paper towel--what would you expect to see and feel in 15 min? Let's do that while we're sorting this out.
So do we need to have the temp at 100 degrees C to get it to change phase from a liquid to gas?
Why or why not?
If there's so much water, why do we need to conserve it?
Let's look at how much water is fresh water on the earth!
What we Know:

3/4 of planet covered in it
freezes at 0 C and boils at 100 C
different life needs different types of water

This is a video of milk under the microscope! The small spheres are fat masses (that's what makes milk creamy!) and they are being moved by something unseen....
Write your ideas to explain what is causing the movement of the milk fat in your DSN.

Calculate 60% of your body weight:

This is the amount of ounces of water you should drink every day.

Now multiply number of oz. x 0.0295735 L = # of liters you need /day

Now find the average number of years a human lives:
How many average days is that?
How many liters would an average person drink in a lifetime?

Total liters of fresh water available per person: 7 million

BUT>>>>WE DON'T JUST DRINK IT STRAIT!!

That comes from the total calculated amount of water (100%) on earth divided among all the people (6 bil.) = 233.3 billion liters/person
Minus the 97% of each share that contains salt = 7 billion liters/person
Minus the 80% of that 7 billion equaling the amount frozen at the poles (5.6 billion L frozen) = 1.4 billion L/person
Minus the 99.5% of the 1.4 billion that is unavailable (too far underground, polluted, trapped in soil, etc.) (1.393 billion L unavailable) = 7 million liters/person to use.

QOD: What if water was only in
liquid form on earth? Why do you
think it can go from liquid to gas?
The Bigger the MASS the Stronger the PULL toward its center:

An object, like you, has mass and has a gravitational force on smaller objects, like a pencil, pulling them toward your center. BUT the EARTH has SO MUCH MORE MASS than you, that it WINS, and its gravitational force draws all objects toward its center, which for all objects is a DOWNWARD pull. Drop your pencil and it falls downward away from you and toward the center of the earth!
