The Middle East
Judaism- A monotheistic religion of the Jewish people by the teaching of the Rabbis

Judaism is one of the three main religions in Jerusalem.
Zionism- political support for the creation and development of a Jewish homeland in Israel

The Jewish people wanted their homeland in Israel so they used Zionism for support.
Jihad- a war or struggle against unbelievers among Muslims.

Jihad is what represents the struggles that Muslims have made just to make god happy.
Christianity- The religion based on Jesus Christ and its beliefs and practices.

Christianity today is the world's largest religion based on its followers.
Islam- the religion of the Muslims, a monotheistic faith, founded by Muhammad the prophet of Allah.

The Islamic people, also known as the Muslim religion, worship in a mosque.
Shiite- one of two main branches of Islam regarding Ali, the son-in-law of Muhammad, as the successor of Muhammad (disregards the other three successors)

Afghanistan has passed a law permitting Shiite men to deny their wives food if they refuse to obey their husbands'.
Arab- a member of any Arabic- speaking people.

An Arabic person is also known as an Arab and they are mostly found in the Middle East.
Ramadan-the ninth month of the Muslim calendar which has strict fasting

The Islamic people go on a strict fasting during Ramadan where they can't eat and drink for a day
OPEC- an organization formed to establish oil- exporting policies and prices

OPEC was founded in 1960 to make policies on oil-exporting.
PLO- Palestine Liberation Organization; it is a terrorist group trying to destroy Zionism.

The PLO don't want to make Israel for the main homeland for Jews.
Yom Kippur
Yom Kippur- the most solemn religious fast of the Jewish year

The Yom Kippur is a high holy day where you can't eat or drink all day.
Palestinian- relating to Palestine or its people

The Palestinian people formed the Christian religion.
Taliban- a Muslim fundamentalist group in Afghanistan

The Taliban enforces strict Muslim code of behavior.
al Qaeda
al Qaeda- a Sunni Muslim organization dedicated to the elimination of Western presence in Arab countries

The al Qaeda group was founded by Osama bin Laden and is the cause of the terrorist attack on the world trade center.
Hamas- A Palestinian Islamic movement engaged in armed resistance and terrorism against Israel

Armed resistance and terrorism against Israel was a movement called Hamas.
Intifada- a revolt by Palestinian Arabs to protest Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip

There has been two total Palestinian Intifadas.
Hijab- a head covering worn in public by some Muslim women

Hijabs come in many different colors and designs and is a tradition for Muslim women to wear.
Bedouin- a nomadic Arab of the desert

The Bedouins have to adapt to their surroundings with limited resources.
Terrorism- the use of violence or threats to intimidate for political purposes

Terrorism groups in the Middle East exists for all different reasons.
Fundamentalism- a form of a religion that upholds belief in a strict, literal interpretation of the scripture

Islamic fundamentalist terrorist groups are a big problem in the Middle East.
Synagogue- a Jewish house of worship

The Jewish people go to the synagogue often to pray and worship.
Mosque- a Muslim temple to worship in

The Muslim people go to the Mosque to worship their god.
Sunni- one of two main branches of Islam, regarding the first four caliphs as successors of Muhammad

Sunni is the biggest branch of Islam.
