Technology and Intermediality
4) ontological intermediality
- a model suggesting that media always already exist in relation to other media.
- It suggests that there are no single media but that intermedial relations take place ubiquitously.
- Experiment: "photography" by naming those elements that are specific for it. It would be insufficient to determine that "photography" creates square pictures, because the pictures of painting, cinema etc., are also square. What do "photography" and "painting" not have in common?
- hard to determine, specifics are not distinct.
- A possiblity is to show "what the others are not" (Saussure 117), i.e., on the (implicit) definitions of other media that have to be used as contrasts.
Intermediality and hip hop
concept: formal structures not "specific" to one medium but found in different media
concepts and principles of media are transferred to other media

Example: the medium 'film' >
other media made into subjects
concepts and principles are separated from the material basis of the media
relatively autonomous

a "fusion" of different media to supermedia < intermedium

characteristic factors
the condemnation of "monomedia"> social and aesthetic alienation
the triumph over "monomedia" as a social liberation
Intermediate forms of art
impossiple to view the origins of the media.
no separation possible, because of the conceptual fusion
The "synthesis" thus lies less in the intermedium itself, but in its perceptive and cognitive assimilation

Intermediality - 4 models (Schröter, 2011)
1) synthetic intermediality
Dick Higgins intermedial artist
> this fusion valid in "new art"
Higgins intermedial art > function of the breaking up of habitualized forms of perception
distinction between media arose in the Renaissance > different classes fostered the purification of media
Reasons:
today: society of simultaneity and social shifts

„We are approaching the dawn of a classless society, to which separation into rigid categories is absolutely irrelevant" (Higgins, 1984)
2) formal (or transmedial) intermediality
Postmodernism
3) transformational intermediality
media always already exist in relation to other media
there are no single media
specifics hard to determine, not distinct
intermedial relations take place ubiquitously
4) ontological intermediality
status: in society, science architecture and art
forced: modernism's ideas of innovation, rationalization, secularization, universality and objectivity
Postmodern art
Experiment:
Naming the elements of a photography !
technology
and mass media affection
locality
and central interests instead of universality
temporality
and process instead of monumentality and permanency
appropriation
and recycling of ideas instead of originality and uniqueness
