Case agreement Case is the form that a noun or pronoun takes to show its relationship to the other words in a sentence. There are three cases in the English language: Subjective (Also called nominative), Objective, and Possessive. Case forms of personal pronouns The subjective case is used when the pronoun is the subject of the verb or predicate nominative Singular Plural First person: Second person: Third person: I You He, She, It We You They Case forms of personal pronouns The objective case is used when the pronoun is the object of the verb or the object of the preposition First person: Second person: Third person: Singular Plural Him, Her, It You Me Us You Them Uses of the Subjective Case Used as the subject of a verb Correct sentences The sun rises. He is rising. Who is coming to dinner? Incorrect sentences Her loves the dog. Him enjoys the sea Them run a lot Uses of the Subjective Case Used as a noun which renames the subject and appears after the verb form am, are, is, was, were, be, been and any other linking verb Correct sentences The soldier became captain This is she Incorrect sentences The coach was whom? The father is him Uses of the Objective Case Used as the direct object of a verb Correct sentences Incorrect sentences The hunter killed him. The captain won an award . They ran passed she. The teacher taught he. Uses of the Objective Case Used as the object of a preposition Correct sentences Incorrect sentences He arrived before her. She jumped over him. He ran between she.
