THE APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS
THE APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS
WHEN WAS IT FORMED
THE APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS
KEY TERMS
-The Appalachian mountains were formed 300 million years ago.

-They were formed during the Paleozoic era

-They began during the formation of Pangea
THE APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS
HOW WAS THE LAND FORMED
-When the North American plates and the Eurasian plates collided, sedimentary rock uplifted causing the formation of mountains.

-When volcanic magma was uprooted igneous and metamorphic rocks were created in certain areas.

-Over time the mountains eroded creating sedimentary rock.

WHERE IS THE LAND LOCATED
THE APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS

Sedimentary Rock
– Rock Particles that collect at the bottom of a sea or lake that collect in layers to form rock. For example sandstone or lime stone.

Igneous Rock
- Cooled magma.

Metamorphic Rock
– stressed igneous or metamorphic rock.

Magma
– melted or molten rock.

Paleozoic Era
– Ancient life when large parts of North America were covered with shallow seas.

Pangaea
- Super continent in which all continents separated from.

KEY TERMS CONTINUED
Plate
– Parts of the earth that move to create mountains, volcanoes , earthquakes and new landforms

Plateaus
– An elevated flat area.

Erosion – wearing a way of Earth’s surface followed by the movement and other location of minerals that have warn away.

Drowned Coastline
– Land sank, ice melted and small inlets along the east coast. Flooded to leave behind harbors to allow large craters to enter.

Renewable Resource
– A natural resource that can be replenished and reused.

Non-metallic minerals
– minerals that do not contain traces of metal such as coal.

Aquaculture-
The rearing, breeding and harvesting of aquatic plants and animals for food from all bodies of water such as lakes, rivers, oceans etc.

ISSUES FACED BY INHABITANTS
-The area of the Appalachian mountains are home to part of Canada's fishing industry.

-It is the oldest industry in Canada but only contributes 0.1% to Canada's economy

-It is Canada's lowest money making industry and only made 4.4 billion dollars in 2004

-New Brunswick produces 17% of Canada's aquaculture and Newfoundland produces 10%

-A study done in 2009 showed that aquaculture employed 14,500 people.

-The Appalachian mountain range extends from the Canadian provinces of Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Quebec and into the United States from New England to Alabama

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE REIGON
Rich in non- metallic minerals such as coal. Also contains some metallic minerals such as iron and Zinc.

-Has “drowned coastlines”.

-Made of both igneous metamorphic and sedimentary rock within the Appalachians.

-What was once jagged peaks are now gentile mountains because over time erosion occurred. Is an elevated flat area.

-Covers about 360 000 km2 of land. Covered by many forests.

-Surrounded by many valleys.

ISSUES FACED BY INHABITANTS
-In the 1990's fishermen began to notice that they were catching fewer and smaller fish.

-Although the government put a pause on all fishing in an effort to rebuild the fish population, it has yet to resolve itself.

-Fishermen were then forced to turn to other fish such as crab, shrimp and lobster to stay in business.

REASONS FOR THE FISHING COLLAPSE
Reason 1) OVER FISHING

-The eastern island provinces rely heavily on fishing because it is their main industry. With excessive fishing and fishing out of season the fish population did not have enough time to regenerate.

Reason 2) IMPROVED FISHING TECHNOLOGY

-Previously, fishing had been done with simple boats and nets. During this time the fish had a chance to swim away and keep the population strong. Now though, with more advanced technology such as sonar the fish don't have a chance.
APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS
REASONS FOR THE FISHING COLLAPSE
Reason 3) DESTRUCTIVE FISHING PRACTICES

-Because of the demand for fish the fishermen employ destructive fishing practices like catching entire schools, catching younger fish and fishing out of season

Reason 4) UNCONTROLLED FOREIGN FISHING

-Their have been multiple disputes over who can fish in whose waters. Because of this other countries have employed their own destructive fishing practices.

Reason 5) CHANGES IN THE NATURAL CONDITIONS

-Due to changes in the natural environment like changing temperatures and rising sea levels, the fish population is having difficulty adapting to new conditions. This is affecting their ability to breed.
