Fashion, Clothing,& Hairstyles
What did girls and guys wear in the 80s? Eighty's fashion for women were mostly jelly bracelets, jelly shoes, neon clothes, and leg warmers. They also brought back polka dots. Oversized sweatshirts over leggings were the norm.

The popular genres of music were pop, hip-hop/rap, new wave, hair metal, rock, punk, and country. There were many popular songs as well. "Call Me" by Blondie, "Magic" by Olivia Newton-John, "All Out of Love" by Air Supply, "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen, "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang, and many more were popular songs in the 80s. Some popular artists were Micheal Jackson, Madonna, INXS, U2, and Aerosmith.
Values (culture, what was important, and slang)
Some things that were important to people in the 1980s was technology. Some things in the 1980s that were significant to people were cell phones, computers, and space shuttles. These were important because of communication, being able to search almost anything in the world, and space exploration.

In the 1980s people were treated very fairly. Some examples of this treatment was Sandra Day O' Connor was named the first woman justice of the Supreme Court. In 1983 Sally Ride became the first U.S. woman in space. Oprah Winfrey shows began airing nationwide in 1986 and became one of the most admired and watched talk show in the country.

Some of slang in the 1980s included what's your damage meaning what is your problem and righteous. Some things that some people could not help saying was the words like and totally while saying it after almost every word. Then we have some phrases like radical, tubular, and grody to the max. And then there are very popular phrases such as who shot JR from the popular show "Dallas", I want my MTV, and wheres the beef from a well know commercial in the 80s all given to us from the wonderful source of Ms. Ruffin.

In the 1980s school was differnt but also the same. It was different because there was new technology that can be used now that people didn't have such as laptops and tablets for research. It was similar because all of the teachers had a duty to make sure all the students had the supplies they needed but also to be successful just like today.
There were many venues were used for entertainment, and some were TV, MTV, theater, radio, computer games, music, sports, movies, and many more. The sports that were popular in the 80s were hockey, basketball, wrestling, football, and boxing. A few video games that were also popular were Turrican, Pac-Man, Supper Mario Bros, and The Legend of Zelda. The films Ordinary People, Chariots of Fire, Grandhi, and so many more were Oscar winners in the 80s. Some famous movie stars were Aidan Quin, Al Brook, and Albert Finney, and some famous sports stars were Arnold Palmer, Carl Lewis, and Cris Evert. There were many popular activities kids played, and some were break dancing, watching horror movies, koosh ball, and the Rubik'd cube. Some popular TV shows were The Bold and Beautiful, The Simpsons, and Full House.
Sideburns in the 70s saw a major drop in fashion in the 80s, big hairstyles were popular by music stars so teens enjoyed the look too. There were normally a large amount of mousse used in styling an individual's hair which resulted in a desired shiny look and greater volume, some mousse even had glitter! In 1984 sideburns made a comeback, but were slightly thinner and shorter, and better groomed than those in the 1970s, lasting until the end of 1986. The Mullets existed in several different styles, all hair short on the sides and long on the back. Mullets were popular in suburban areas among working class men.

1980s clothing styles for men included acid washed jeans, jean jackets, parachute pants, high top shoes, and t-shirts. Unless you were in "the" crowd. Then you wore Izod shirts, with collar up, dress pants, and penny loafer shoes.
Scrunchies and headbands in all different colors and patterns were popular. Scrunchies were very popular in the side pony tail style. Bangs were another popular hair style during the time. Also, Giant, ornament- like earrings were very popular among women, as well as wearing many bracelets.
Economy and Politics
At the beginning of the 1980s in the United States, there was a giant anti-nuclear protest in New York's Central Park, and the decade closed with mass demonstrations against the governments slow actions against the AIDS crisis. The time period saw great social, economic, and general change as wealth and production moved to newly industrializing economies. Major civil discontent and violence in the middle east, including the Iran-Iraq War, the Soviet-Afghan War, the 1982 Lebanon War, Nagorno-Karabakh War, the bombing of Libya in 1986, and the first Intifada in the Gaza strip and the West Bank. This was when the Cold War ended. Property is the right vested on the individual or a group of people to enjoy the benefits of an object, be it material, or intellectual. The history of politics is reflected in the origin, development, and economics of the institutions of government. Also, the president in the 1980s war Ronald Reagan. The increased military budget combined with the tax cuts and the growth in government health spending resulted in the federal government spending far more than it received in revenues each year. In 1982, there where more than 3 million jobless people. There was a massive oil shortage in the 1980s as well. By 1983, the stag inflation caused by the oil crisis in 1973 eased, the economy rebounded, and the United States began a sustained period of economic growth.

1. Can you describe what your life was like in the 1980s?

I got married at the beginning of the 1980s – in 1981. I was also going to school to get my Master’s Degree in Nursing and working full time, so I was very busy. I was living in Pittsburgh, PA from 1980 – 1985 and then moved to Buffalo, NY for the rest of the decade. I taught at the University of Buffalo.

2. What was your reaction when the shuttle, Challenger, exploded?

I was very distressed as were most people in the U.S. I think many of us wondered why did they send people on that mission who were not part of the space program. It seemed very dangerous.

3. Did you like the fashion on the 1980s? Explain why or why not.

I don’t remember what the fashion was like in the 1980s, so I can’t comment on this question. I have never been very interested in fashion.

Some inventions that were important and influential in the 1980s were the space shuttle that helped influence people's interest in space again. The internet was also very popular because you could search anything in the world. One brand of a PC making company that became very popular was the Apple Macintosh company. Another invention was the cell phone made by Motorola in 1983 that was about the size of a brick.

The inventions that impacted American people in the 80s were space shuttles doing very important missions and getting Americans interested in space again. Then the Apple Macintosh computers later evolving into things such as iPads, iPods, and iPhones making peoples lives very easy.
