This artefact is important to me as it reflects my ability to understand students and how they learn by developing programs and activities which cater to their diverse needs in the classroom.
The focus of my artefact is on issues relating to culturally and linguistically diverse groups within the school community.
Analysis / Reflection and Research
A disengaged Year 9 class consisting of 90 % culturally and linguistically diverse learners.
Implement an eVoc strategy using the program Wordle to cater to the diverse literacy and social needs of students within my classroom.
"When teachers build on students' prior knowledge and
skills and then provide appropriate scaffolding,
students can move more easily from what they
know to what they need to know. Building on students'
prior knowledge and experiences provides opportunities
for authentic learning and also improves student
engagement " (Willis, 2000).
"Developing breadth and depth of vocabulary
for culturally and linguistically diverse leaners (CALD)
depends on building connections between words
and developing elaborate webs of meaning"
(Dalton & Grisham, 2013).
"Graphic organizers and visual displays are useful for CALD learners as they clearly highlight the relationships
between words" (Dalton & Grisham, 2013)
What I learned:
I now realise the importance as a teacher of finding out what types of learners occupy your classroom.
I now understand the importance of adjusting content to suit students diverse needs.
Students with diverse needs require structured tasks with plenty of scaffolding.
CALD students prefer visual tasks
It is important to understand who is in your classroom, what needs they have and develop programs and activities which cater to their specific needs.
