lesson eq: what steps will you take to create an effective thesis statement?
Do Now: Refer to your outline from yesterday and answer the following questions.

What is the main idea of your essay?
What argument are you making?
What facts and evidence do you plan to use to support your claim/argument?
A thesis statement is the most important part of your essay. It is the sentence in your introductory paragraph that lists:
the central message of the essay
your position
brief mentioning of the points that you will make to prove your claim
The purpose of the thesis statement is to not only let your reader know what your essay will be about, but also to help guide you in your writing and keep you focused on your argument.
As mentioned, a thesis statement belongs in your introduction (usually the last sentence of your introduction) because it lets the reader know what the essay will be about. To write an effective thesis statement, you should:

be as clear and specific as possible- avoid vague words
indicate the purpose of your essay, but avoid dull sentences like "the point of my paper is..."
avoid personal pronouns (I, my, you, etc.)
