The Arid Desert LOCATION Most arid deserts are at lower altitudes There are arid deserts in North America, South America, Africa, and Southern Asia The Sahara in North Africa is the largest arid desert in the world All of the blue is arid desert! CLIMATE Arid deserts have less than 10 inches of rainfall per year It can be as low as 32 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter and as high or higher than 113 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer There are very few winds in the arid desert, but in some locations there can be dangerous sandstorms GEOLOGY Arid deserts can be formed by rain shadows, mountains that block the path of precipitation to the area resulting in an arid desert there are different kinds of dunes along with its usual sandy and rocky surfaces the soil is most always either sand or coarse and rocky plants! prickly pear cactus THis cactus is found in all deserts of the american southwest adaptations: many pads help to store water in a drought roots are made for rapid absorbtion in very dry environments Saguaro cactus These are found in the american southwest and are known mostly for their appearances in western movies adaptations: they have smooth waxy skin to aid in retaining water with sharp spines for protection accordion-like pleats in their skin expand in rain, storing extra water in dry times etymology: Latin desertum means "an abandoned place," and prior to 20th century to english meant unpopulated area mesquite tree mesquite trees can be found across the american southwest Adaptations: mesquite trees can have roots up to 100 feet long extending into the ground to acquire moisture ocotillo perennial that is found primarily in the sonoran and chihuahuan deserts. adaptations: it has widespread roots that can quickly absorb water to help it quickly grow the ocotillo can enter a stage of dormancy in very dry times to keep it alive creosote bush a tough arid desert bush that is found in all the american southwest adaptations: instead of the typical thorns for protection, this bush releases a nasty smell the pores in its leaves can open and close depending on day or night and moisture levels ANimals! Gila monster one of two venomous species of lizards that lives in the american southwest and into mexico physical adaptation: has venom to aid in the killing process while it chews its prey behavioral adaptation: only in warm weather will it hunt to add fat to its tail Roadrunner Bird from the american southwest that prefers to run instead of fly physical adaptation: its body will reabsorb the water from its feces before excretion behavioral adaptation: the roadrunner will decrease its activity during the heat of the day by 50 percent kangaroo rat rodent found only in the most arid deserts of the united states physical adaptation: kangaroo rats have a special ability to jump and have great agility to get away from enemies behavioral adaptation: no matter how hot it is outside, the kangaroo rat will only come out at night when evaporation is at its lowest point fire ants species of venomous ant that inhabits the american southwest behavioral adaptation: fire ants are able to take food from other animals by placing their venom on their hind end physical adaptation: any animal that tries to mess with their nest will get a nasty venomous bite these ants are capable of Spotted hyena dog-like omnivore that scavenges the saharan desert in africa physical adaptation: hyenas are scavenging omnivores that can eat almost anything they find to help them survive behavioral adaptation: since they are nocturnal and do a lot of sleeping during the day, hyenas have amazing night vision to help them hunt at night http://www.neok12.com/php/watch.php?v=zX05704e74437542704f4051&t=Deserts symbiotic relationship yucca plant and the yucca moth The yucca plant that is native to the arid deserts is a plant that could not survive without the pollination that the yucca moth does. in places where there are no moths, the only way these plants can reproduce is by hand pollination by humans. the yucca plant also is the home of the eggs of the yucca moth Video of the animals and their adaptations to the arid desert Works CitedFull transcript
