Group Performance
Topic 8: Significant Plays of the 20th Century
This topic explores, theoretically and experientially, how significant theatrical works shifted and influenced the theatrical paradigm of the 20th century. The study explores plays that were revolutionary in response to the place and time of the original production, presented challenging content and reinvented or created new theatrical styles, structures and forms. By engaging with the performance and narrative styles, issues, techniques, conventions and staging of the plays, students will explore the impact and ways these plays broke new ground and sought to affect an audience in dynamic and powerful ways.

Australian Drama and Theatre
Topic 1: Dramatic Traditions in Australia
This topic explores, theoretically and experientially, the traditional and contemporary practices of Australian drama and theatre and the various ways in which artistic, cultural, social, political and personal issues and concerns are reflected in different contexts. Students investigate how different Australian practitioners use dramatic forms, performance styles, techniques and conventions to convey ideas and influence the ways in which audiences understand and respond to ideas and images presented in the theatre.
This year you will need…
An IP Logbook – you may end up using multiple logbooks. Whilst your log can be typed, you must have a HARD COPY logbook. All IPs involve drawing and/or annotating. These logbooks will be collected periodically throughout the year (usually once a term and not necessarily all at once). Remember, you cannot have any identifying features on your logbook (eg. Name, school, etc), but you will need to be able to identify it to me (post-it notes work well!)

A workbook for theory – this will be used in class and as a study tool for you. I do not mind you using your laptops to take notes, write practice essays, etc, but you will need something to draw in, stick/store handouts in and create annotations. Remember that you will ultimately be assessed in a written, not typed, exam. These books will not be marked, but you need to keep them up to date and NOT LOSE ANYTHING. If you are away and miss a theory lesson, it is your responsibility to catch up.
A GP Logbook – This will be used from DAY 1 of Term 2 2015. You may end out with more than one book depending on how much you write/stick in. You should be using this as a process diary in which you include brainstorms/mindmaps, scripts (including drafts and scribbled notes, and annotated scripts), stage diagrams, prop lists, etc as well as regular retell, reflect, critique entries. These will be marked periodically.

It is expected that all theory work is completed. This is a mandatory part of the course. Generally speaking, you will rarely have a lesson where it is purely theory, however if we cannot get through the theory, the practical has to wait. Because you have to talk about your EXPERIENCES with the text, we will often be trying out different sections of the text in different ways.
CORE HOMEWORK: Much like English, you will have a core task for each theory unit. It will usually involve a little bit of research – including finding YouTube videos – that give you a broader understanding of how the plays have been staged.
