Transcript of Lady Gaga as a Transcendentalist

Born This Way
She expresses acceptance and love through her music with songs like "Born This Way."

Transcendentalism is the belief of non-conformity, self-reliance, reverence for all people and all nature, a belief of an Over-Soul, and anti-materialism.
Non-conformity is the refusal to reform or follow along with established rules.
Self-reliance means being dependent upon oneself and not needing to be aided in every day life tasks.
Reverence for all people and nature means to be respectful of all living and breathing things.
The Over-Soul is what they called a God.
Anti-materialism is when one considers material things not important in life.

Born This Way
The lyrics in the song "Born This Way" say this: "It doesn't matter if you love him, or capitol
H-I-M." Here she is expressing that she believes in an Over-Soul, but she will accept you no matter who or what a person believes in. (5)
"I'm beautiful in my way
'Cause God makes no mistakes
I'm on the right track, baby
I was born this way," here she also expresses how she believes in an Over-Soul, or God. (5)
The Born This Way Foundation
"Led by Lady Gaga and her mother Cynthia Germanotta, the Born This Way Foundation was founded in 2011 to foster a more accepting society, where differences are embraced and individuality is celebrated. The Foundation is dedicated to creating a safe community that helps connect young people with the skills and opportunities they need to build a kinder, braver world. (4)

We believe that everyone has the right to feel safe, to be empowered and to make a difference in the world. Together, we will move towards acceptance, bravery and love."

"The Born This Way Foundation (BTWF) is an American non-profit organization
founded in 2011 by recording artist Lady Gaga and her mother Cynthia Germanotta.
Established at Harvard University, and named after Gaga's second studio album
Born This Way (2011), the foundation aims to inspire youth and build better
communities. BTWF works in partnership with the Berkman Center for Internet &
Society at Harvard University, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation
and the California Endowment.[2] The foundation aims to create a "braver, kinder
world" for youths; create safe-spaces, promote the learning of life skills, and
provide opportunities to improve their local communities.[3] In a statement,
Lady Gaga said "My mother and I have initiated a passion project [...] to
establish a standard of bravery and kindness, as well as a community worldwide
that protects and nurtures others in the face of bullying and abandonment."[4]
In September 2012 Gaga was awarded the Lennon-Ono Grant For Peace from Yoko Ono
for her work with the foundation "actively campaigning on pro-tolerance and
peace issues."[5][6] The award "intends to keep that pop activism alive" in the
spirit of Ono and her late husband John Lennon whose song "Imagine" includes the
famous line "imagine all the people living life in peace.
"most obviously her fashion (spark cages on her breasts, mirrored dresses,
bubble outfit, rubber suit) but then also her performances (see Royal Variety
performance and VMAs last year)
her music is atypical... she plays the piano standing up, she only sings live or
live with backing track opposed to lip synching
and then there's her behavior... her teacups etc..." (1)

Lady Gaga has relied on herself for a long time, every since she was a child. She grew up in New York and moved out of her parents home when she was about 19. She was on her own for a few years while she was starting her career. She had two jobs when she first began writing songs and singing as a career. She used her money to pay for her own apartment. This shows her self reliance.

Lady Gaga as a Transcendentalist
Lady Gaga represents these Transcendentalist ideas through her actions and music.
Self-reliance and connecting with intuition
Belief in an Over-Soul
Lady Gaga believes in being one with yourself and being connected and loving everyone and everything.
Her Born This Way Foundation helps to reach out and aid people in need.
"I've been actually really very pleased to see how much awareness was raised around bullying, and how deeply it affects everyone. You know, you don't have to be the loser kid in high school to be bullied. Bullying and being picked on comes in so many different forms." -Lady Gaga on bullying and helping others.

A Quote From Gaga
"I'm very religious. I was raised Catholic I believe in Jesus, I believe in God, I'm very spiritual -- I pray very much." -Lady Gaga
An example of Lady Gaga's immense love for everyone she gave a homeless man who was wandering on the street a rose, a good amount of money to get off on a good foot, and she took a photo with him. When they posed for a photo the man said that he smelled bad and he didn't want her to stink too but she just said it didn't matter because she smelled bad as well. (3)
Lady Gaga showed her nonconformist side when she was in Russia. Russia does not support gay rights and while she was in Russia, performing a concert, she yelled aloud "Arrest me Russia, I'm gay!" Now it is believed that she will not be allowed back into Russia.
