When summarizing you should use your own words without changing the meaning or sequence.
Summarizing involves taking large sections of text and reducing them into shorter concise passages.
The five finger summary is an easy method to quickly summarize
Five Finger Summarizing Strategy
Create a summary that are 20 words or less for reading passages.
GIST Summarizing Strategy
Here are some passages for you to apply one of the strategies.
What is summarizing?
Remember focus on the most important details.
It can be used for a page, for a chapter, or for an entire book..
To summarize information by getting rid of unimportant information and focusing on the key words/ideas of the reading passage.
Use the GIST strategy during and after reading.
1. Read the first two paragraphs of a text. and pick out the who, what, when, where and why of the paragraph and related important information but only in 10/20 words (gist) about this essential information
.
3. Write a summary in 20 or less words using your
gist list
.
Challenge
Keep gisting but now you are going to combine all your gist list of twenty words into one main list of 20 or less words of essential information. Now you are ready to create a 20 words summary of the whole reading passage.

4. Continue to reading and gisting every two paragraphs until you finish the passage.
