But one day, when she finally speaks about what really happened at that party, she'll be able to breathe once again.

This novel moved and surprised me. It was a wake up call showing that this is the real world and that anything can happen to anyone.
Personal Response cont.
The larger message that I took from this novel was to be more careful and to be more aware of your surroundings.
Her eyes meet mine for a second. "I hate you," she mouths silently. She turns her back to me and laughs with her friends. I bite my lip. I am not going to think about it.
This quote demonstrates the tone by the use of a negative statement towards Melinda. All throughout the novel Melinda puts up with negative comments, but she also says and thinks negative comments of others.
Personal Response cont.
Also, if something like this were to happen to you, tell someone immediately, don't wait and hold it in just because you feel it will embarrass you.
There is a beast in my gut, I can hear it scraping away inside of my ribs. Even if I dump the memory, it will stay with me, staining me.
My closet is a good thing, a quiet place that helps me hold these thoughts inside my head where no one can hear them."
The significance of this quote is to show how Melinda really feels inside. It illustrates her conflict within. Also, this quote helps define Melinda's character.
I chose this theme because Melinda wants to be heard, to tell the truth.
speak her voice
The setting takes place in Syracuse, Connecticut in which is described and feels as though it is in the 21st century; a present teenage girl's life.
Melinda is the main character in this novel. She is THE outcast in her school. No one will talk to her, not even her old friends. She is all alone.
Melinda struggles with a conflict in herself. She wishes to tell someone, anyone the truth about what really happened that night at the party but for some reason she fights herself not to say a word.
Melinda's conflicts conti.
Melinda also struggles with a conflict against society. Everyone she knows hates her, even strangers hate her for something that wasn't her fault.
