Associated with every mobile equipment is
international mobile equipment identity number
and it is used to identify a valid device within a
GSM
network
SIM
The IMEI is only used for the identification of device and has
nothing
to do with the identification of
subscriber
SUBSCRIBER IDENTITY MODULE

SIM)
is a small detachable card which is responsible for the identification of the subscriber within the GSM network
Assosiated with SIM is the

IMSI
number
IMSI is a unique identification number and usually TIMSI's are generated

Each BTS is controlled by its
parent BSC which manages the radio
resources as
Radio channel setup
Frequency hoping
Handovers
It assigns and releases

frequencies
and time slots for the MS.

It allocate the necessary
time slots
between the BTS and the MSC.
NSS
(network switching subsystem)
It carries out
call switching
mobility management
function
It allows mobile devices to
communicate
with each other and other telephones via
PSTN
It is the heart of the network and is sometimes known as
"CORE NETWORK"
MSC
is the major part of the NSS
It contains data bases which play
key role in the authentication and
validation of SIMS and other functions
Tasks of
MSC
The MSC performs the
switching
functions of the network. It also provides connection to other networks
It is also responsible for following important functions
Registration
Authentication

Call location

Inter MSC handovers
Call routing to a mobile subscriber
RECAP
HLR

This database contains all the administrative information about each subscriber along with their last known location
VLR
Contains information from a subscriber's HLR necessary
to provide the subscribed services to visiting users
When a subscriber enters the covering area of a new MSC, the VLR associated to this MSC will request information about the new subscriber to its corresponding HLR
EIR
The EIR is the entity that decides whether a given mobile equipment may be allowed onto the network OR not
AUC
The AUC is a protected database that contains the secret key also contained in the user's SIM card.
