Welcome to AVID
Lets get the obvious out of the way. These computers are awesome. They come equipped with great tools for us to express ourselves and have great apps for us to use to demonstrate what we know. Winston Churchill once said, "With great power comes great responsibility". These laptops have given each of you added responsibility. Bring it everyday to class....fully charged.
Evernote might be the single greatest tool ever invented. We will create free accounts in Evernote and this may be where you decide to take all of your notes, using a Cornell Note format. I will explain this to you in greater detail in the future. The best part about Evernote is the search feature. For example, lets say that you prefer to write your notes on paper. No problem, you will write your notes and then take a picture of them. Then you will send that picture to your Evernote account. When you need to refer to your notes, you can Search for the info and Evernote will recognize your handwriting and pull up the picture of your notes. Cue the demonstration!
We will use Edmodo every day in class. I dislike the functionality of Blackboard so instead we use Edmodo. Does it remind you of anything else that you might use on a daily basis? On this site I will post links to important information, documents for you to view, and assignments for you to complete. This will also be how you submit your assignments to me once completed. The calendar will show due dates and test dates. We will create our Edmodo accounts in a moment.
We all have them and we all use them. Understand that there are appropriate and inappropriate times to use them. It is never OK for you to be on your phone when I am talking. When instruction is occurring I want your full attention. Once we begin working on the days tasks you may have your devices out. You may listen to music most of the time, I will let you know when it is not allowed. If you need to make a phone call just let me know and we will make arrangements. I only have three rules with your mobile devices. If any of these three rules are broken your mobile device will be confiscated. 1. You may only take photos in my classroom with permission. 2. You may only take video footage with my permission. 3. You may only audio record in class with my permission. This is all part of being responsible digital citizens.
Digital Citizenship is a concept which helps teachers, technology leaders and parents to understand what students/children/technology users should know to use technology appropriately. Digital Citizenship is more than just a teaching tool; it is a way to prepare students/technology users for a society full of technology. Too often we are seeing students as well as adults misusing and abusing technology but not sure what to do. The issue is more than what the users do not know but what is considered appropriate technology usage.
Prezi is a site that you will use to create presentations like the one you are watching now. It is the new powerpoint and I think we can all agree is WAAAAAAYYYYY better than a boring stationary powerpoint. You will have time to explore this site as the semester progresses.
Whenever we create a login for a new website like Edmodo, Evernote, or Prezi, I want you to create a New Contact in your Address Book. This way, if you forget your login information you can quickly access it. Watch the tutorial below.
MY GOAL IS TO UPDATE MY GRADEBOOK WEEKLY. AT TIMES DURING THE YEAR IT MAY TAKE ME LONGER THAN THAT TO GRADE SOME OF OUR PROJECTS. PLEASE BE PATIENT, I KNOW YOU ARE EXCITED TO SEE HOW YOU DID BUT I WANT TO MAKE SURE I GIVE EACH OF YOU THE APPROPRIATE FEEDBACK SO YOU CONTINUE TO PROGRESS AS A LEARNER.
IF THERE IS EVER AN ISSUE WITH ONE OF YOUR GRADES PLEASE COME AND TALK TO ME ABOUT IT. I'M NOT PERFECT, SOMETIMES I MAY ENTER THE WRONG SCORE OR NO SCORE AT ALL. JUST COME TALK TO ME ABOUT IT AND WE WILL GET IT TAKEN CARE OF.
First off, welcome back to school.
School is soooo Boring!!!
Technically....yes this is a classroom, however, I don't want you to think of this as a classroom. Classrooms are sterile, they have a hospital feel to them. White walls, generic carpet, bright fluorescent lights, and a stingy odor. In my room the lights will be dimmed, hopefully it smells better than stingy, and you find that overall it is more comfortable then other rooms you have experienced in the past.
Is this a classroom?
Who Am I?
I am a Son, Brother, Husband, and a Father
This is my second year here at Staley
Before I started teaching I worked in the front office for the Missouri Mavericks Hockey Team here in Kansas City
Things I like to do outside of school
How many of you agree with this? I want you to know that school this year is going to be different than anything else you have experienced. We are going to work and have a lot of fun together. We will be together for the rest of your journey here at Staley and I want that to mean something to you.
Blah! Blah! Blah!
For many of you, you just heard Blah! Blah! Blah! This is school and you have made up your mind that school is a terrible place. In my class we are going to LEARN. An "education" sounds awful doesn't it? It sounds like something you are diagnosed with. Lets focus on "learning" instead. I want to have a conversation in here. I want you to think of new ways to express what you know. Some days that may be us sitting around talking, other days you all will be chatting on your computers. Regardless, all of you will be contributing by adding your own input to our discussions. You will have to participate in here!
Does this mean we have to talk to each other?
Absolutely! You are all very smart and I want to know what you have to say. This is of the utmost importance, otherwise I'm standing in front of you all talking to myself. I don't like talking to myself, people already think I am weird, the talking to myself thing won't help me.
Do us all a favor, DO NOT play games in this class. I know you will have them and I know they are sweet. You will have plenty of work to do in this room and in most cases those sitting around you will be depending on you to complete your work for the group. We are all mature and responsible digital citizens in here and I know that this will not be a problem.
What does this mean?
This means that you are going to learn how to effectively use technology as a tool for learning. Its more than tweeting pictures of yourself at Longboards or Starbucks. I am going to teach you how to utilize technology to become lifelong learners. It also means that you have responsibility to use technology appropriately.
Be respectful! This just about covers it. Facts can be argued but opinions give us alternative viewpoints.
Never post anything online that you wouldn't say out loud in class.
Bring your laptop everyday
Be prompt to class, continued tardiness will be addressed.
Participate! You are responsible for YOUR learning, lets make the most of it.
Things happen, we have bad days, we get lost, we get held up by other teachers, I understand that these things can happen. However, they don't happen every day. If you are late, quietly come in to class and take your seat. Please do not cause a distraction when you come in. At an appropriate time during class or after class come discuss with me why you were late. Please do not show up late and then create a scene when you enter the room.
Welcome to Staley!
There are some common misconceptions about what I am suppose to do as your teacher. Understand that I am not a walking, talking answer bank. I have picked each question for you to answer specifically, if you don't know the answer you need to investigate and find it. My job is to help you through the investigation process until you find that right answer. Don't be lazy and don't be ignorant. You are all very capable and intelligent students and I am going to challenge you. My job is to teach you how to learn through attentive note taking, dissecting information, and effectively demonstrating your knowledge both orally and in written form. My job is not to teach you how to memorize abstract facts so that you do well on tests.
what is the Teachers Job?
I want to end by talking about Twitter briefly. My Twitter is 100% transparent and a completely open platform. You can go to Google and type in my Twitter handle and all of my tweets will pull up. I use Twitter with my students in the classroom (@StaleyAVID), to update basketball players, parents, fans (@StaleyHoops) and I also use Twitter for professional development. If you are on Twitter, I encourage you to follow @StaleyAVID, if you have a question send me a tweet and I will do my best to answer it. If your parents have a question I encourage them to tweet me was well. Obviously, they can call my office phone or email me as well. Twitter is just an informal way for them or you to ask me a quick questions regarding class.
As the semester progresses you will learn more on this but just know that I am available during the entire hour of Falcon Hour. I may be eating lunch as I teach but you are always welcome to come in my room to ask me questions or work on assignments. If I am not there or have a full class I will post a NO VACANCY sign on my door. You may bring your lunch to my room if you want.
What is the students job?
Your job is to come to class prepared every day. Your job is to participate in class discussions whether posting online or voicing your opinion in class. We all have opinions and I want you to voice yours so that we can all learn from each other. Your job is not to think of me as a source of information but as the tour guide who is going to help you get to the information you need. School is not a place for you to come to, to watch adults work. You will be doing the work in here!
