Ed Sheeran Childhood Ed Sheeran was born February 17th, 1991 in Halifax, West Yorkshire. He learned guitar at a very young age, and began writing songs during his time at Thomas Mills High School in Framlingham. His early childhood memories included listening to Van Morrison on his trips to London with his parents and going to a gig with Damien Rice in Ireland when he was 11. Discovery He moved to London in 2008 to play gigs, starting off in very small venues, playing every day, to as little as five people. In April 2010, Sheeran went to LA. He played open mic nights all over the city, before his talent was spotted by Jamie Foxx, who was so impressed that he offered Sheeran the use of his recording studio for the rest of his stay. Throughout 2010, Sheeran began to be seen by more people over the internet through YouTube and his fan-base grew Albums + + marks his commercial breakthrough. It is his debut studio album, released through Atlantic Records on September 9, 2011. + debuted on top of the UK Albums Chart the first week selling more than 102,000 copies. It was number 5 US Billboard 200, selling 42,000 copies. He dropped out of school at age 16 and spent his student grant on rail tickets moving place to place performing at open-mic nights across the U.K. EPs Ed Sheeran recorded his first EP aged 14. He recorded a total of five EP's in a hope to get him signed by a record label. His fifth EP reached number 2 in the iTunes chart without any promotion or label. Awards Won British Breakthrough Act, British Solo Male Artist, Breakthrough Artist of the year, Best Song Musically and Lyrically, Breakthrough Artist, Best Single, and was nominated for many more. Singles His debut single from the + album was "The A Team", "You Need Me, I Don't Need You" was announced as the second single reaching #4 on the UK Singles Chart, "Lego House" was the third single reaching the top 10 on Australian, Irish, Scottish, New Zealand Singles Charts. Songwriting The songs "Moments", "Little Things", and "Over Again" from the band One Direction were co-written by Ed Sheeran. Sheeran co-wrote and sings duet on the song "Everything Has Changed" from Taylor Swift's Red album. Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran Music Genre Ed Sheeran sings folk, acoustic, and soul. His music style is said to be an unlikely combination of acoustic folk and grime. Tours From March to September 2013, he is scheduled to play 58 dates at arenas and stadiums across North America as the opening act for Taylor Swift's Red Tour. In January 2012, it was announced that he would support Snow Patrol on their US tour from late March until May on the band's Fallen Empires Tour. Philanthropy Ed volunteers at homeless shelters and performed a gig in Bristol, which raised £40,000 for a charity that reaches out to street sex workers. He said he feels it's his responsibility to help make a difference. Ed volunteered at a homeless shelter, and met a woman who told him her story. Her name was Angel. He then went and did some more research about the issues and obviously he must have been moved and inspired to have written The A Team, his single. At the Bristol charity event He also says he's doing a naked photo shoot to help raise money for Elton John's Aids Foundation. Recent Events He performed "The A Team" at the United Kingdom's Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II on June 4, 2012. Ed did a cover of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics on August 12, 2012. Future Plans Ed Sheeran's next album will be out in February 2014 and says he's planning on writing more songs for the album while touring with Taylor Swift this spring.
