GEOLOGY
Nea, Gerta, Mattis, Frida, Filippa
To what extent can we acquire knowledge from scientific theories?
Geology
"The science which deals with the physical structure and substance of the earth, their history, and the processes which act on them."
- Oxford dictionary
Plate Tectonics
A scientific theory that describes the large-scale motion of Earth's lithosphere

This theoretical model builds on the concept of continental drift which was developed during the first few decades of the 20th century
Pangaea
A super-continent that existed during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras
Formed approximately 300 million years ago
Began to break apart after about 100 million years
Pangaea was the first reconstructed super-continent
The evidence of Wegener's theory
Alfred Wegener
The rejection of Wegener's theory
geophysicist and meteorologist
High velocity of continental motion (250cm/year)
Additional evidence for Pangaea is found in the geology of adjacent continents
Plausible driving force missing
Continental drift
born November 1st 1880 in Berlin
theory of continental drift 1912
Unawareness of the plate tectonics theory (no evidence of how the continents had been moving)
Fossils of the therapsid Lystrosaurus have been found in South Africa, India and Australia
Members of the Glossopteris flora, whose distribution would have ranged from the polar circle to the equator if the continents had been in their present position
The freshwater reptile Mesosaurus has been found in only localized regions of the coasts of Brazil and West Africa
His hypothesis was controversial and not widely accepted

the founding father of one of the major scientific revolutions of the 20th century.
Do you believe in the Pangaea theory?
Why?

Fossil evidence for Pangaea includes the presence of similar and identical species on continents that are now great distances apart.
contains subcategories such as: hydrogeology, geophysics, mineralogy etc.
dates back to thousands of years
Some of the most significant advances in 20th century geology have been the development of the theory of plate tectonics in the 1960s.
