Tesfaye got his name 'The Weeknd' by dropping out of high school, then coming home one weekend. He left later with a fellow crew-member, and never returned. He removed the 'e' in his name to avoid copyright issues with a Canadian band called: The Weekend.
The Origin of the Name
Rose wanted to scrap all the songs they had made so far, but Tesfaye kept them. Later, he uploaded 3 songs: 'The Morning', 'What You Need' and 'Loft Music' on to YouTube under the name: The Weeknd. Rose was not credited at all in these videos, and they both split up. The songs got popular by word of mouth, and landed on music websites.
In June of 2012, it was reported that Trilogy was downloaded a whopping 8 million times! The Weeknd further said that he would release a physical copy of Trilogy later that year with 3 CDS with each album, and 3 different posters. The Weeknd also reached 900+ million views on his YouTube music video: The Hills.
The Weeknd started going out on more tours with his crew members. The shows he performed at had sold-out tickets, and got a lot of praise from reviewers. In 2012, The Weeknd joined with Republic Records and made his own imprint: XO. He made remastered versions of his old songs, and made a Trilogy Album, which included remastered HOB, EOS and Thursday. The album also had a few new songs. He finally credited Rose properly in these remastered versions.
