Text 9 'Why we all need to eat red meat' John Torode
Paragraph 1
P: Similarities of the texts through the steer topic/s
L: How this is portrayed i.e what devices are used e.g triadic structures, alliteration, colloquial language
E: Through the third person pronoun 'you', Torode creates a personal relationship with the reader, which is also used throughout text 11.
A: What effect does this create? Why is this created? How does this help with the purpose of the genre? Compare with continual use of imperatives in text 11.
Background Information
Text 9 was created in 2008, at a time where “healthy eating” campaigns were attracting a lot of attention.

Doctors were telling patients not to consume red meat due to harm of the body, and it is better to substitute it with nuts to get the protein.

John Torode was granted a divorce from his wife for his romance with actress Lisa Faulkner.

Use of hyperbole:
Text 9 -Frequent use of over exaggerating his points to make it seem more genuine. For example “it was very, very difficult even to get a good sausage”.
Text 11- to exaggerate the efficiency of the given website “you can view hundreds of recipes”

John Torode uses the technique of mixing both fact and opinion so that it will make his opinion look like a reliable source, when mixing it in with the scientific approach and statistics.

However, Torode also often mentions the other side of the argument, to show unbiased opinions and to gain trust of the readers. For example, “Yes, we are becoming more obese …”

The text is organised in an uncluttered and simple layout. The writer uses subtle and understated colours of dark green text and information band on white- colours of vegetables and health.
Both images have captions or taglines which are direct quotes from individuals.
The 1st image is celebrity endorsed and (Why is this used? Why in a studio?) the second ordinary person (Why is this used?).

Long compound complex sentences – (tied in with scientific language) to show his intelligence to the reader. 'I began to dig into the subject and learn more about British meat, travelling all over the country to meet farmers and discovering small suppliers who did produce excellent quality cuts.'
Short sentences – Short sentences will add an impact to a point he is making. For example “We are.” 'We don't need this'

Repetition – By repeating the same point or the same phrase over and over again, it adds emphasis to the fact/opinion. For example, “too much fat, too much sugar, too much salt, too much everything- this is also syntactical parallelism, triadic structure and incrementation.

Alliteration – Use of alliteration throughout the text, to appeal to the interest and imagination of the reader. For example “Beef was the bad boy of British Culture”.

There is a frequent use of asking rhetorical questions, to engage the reader, and then answering them in the text to show his superior
knowledge (Subjecteo) For example “So how can you make sure that you cook it in a way that…? First, find a …”

Patronises meat eaters in order to make the reader feel more confident about coming vegetarian “usually from people who know very little about their own health and dietary needs”
