below." Pg.19 Setting The setting takes place in a apartment building on the eleventh floor in New York City. Characters The characters in this story
are Tom Benecke and Clare Benecke. "He was tall, lean, dark-haired young
man in a pullover sweater."
pg.19 Tom Clare "A slender, very pretty
girl with light brown,
almost blonde, hair"
pg.20 Conflict Tom's Paper with ideas of a new grocery store display method flew out the window AND Tom has set work as a priority over his family. "He swung a leg over the sill, then felt for and found the ledge a yard below with his foot." pg.23 Theme Theme of this Short Story is that a person should treasure what they have already have. "Contents of the dead man's
pockets, he thought, one sheet of
paper bearing penciled notations, incomprehensible" pg.31 Falling Action "And, as he grasped the edges of the empty window frame and climbed into his home, he was grinning in triumph." pg.125 Tom climbed back into his apartment with the yellow paper that he went to retrieve. By Jack Finney Resolution The yellow sheet flies out the window and Tom leaves to meet his wife. Climax Tom breaks the window to save his life. "The with full power, With every last scrap of Strength he could bring to bear, he shot his arm forward toward the glass, and said, 'Clare!'" pg. 32 "As he saw the yellow paper...sail out into the night and out of his life, Tom Benecke burst into laughter and then closed the door behind him." pg. 32 Rising Action Tom goes out onto the ledge
Tom almost falls while retreiving the paper.
Tom stumbles and falls, shutting the window
Tom realizes he wont make it until his wife returns
Tom tries to draw attention to him self Symbolism The yellow paper symbolizes Tom's priorities in hife. "...his fingers had the paper by a corner...at the same instant he saw, between his legs and far below, Lexington Avenue..." (24)
