The Woman Who Changed Fashion Entrepreneur: a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk. What qualities make for a good entrepreneur? - Leader? be able to focus on objectives
- High-energy person? job requires considerable energy
- Self-confidence? be confident of attaining your business goals
- Organized? make good use of your time
-Competitive? your business will always be in competition
- Risk Taker? opportunity comes with risk Economy and struggles faced: The economic depression of the 1930s had a negative impact on Chanel’s company, but it was World War II that forced her to close shop. Chanel closed her salon immediately after World War II had been declared. She decided there was no time for fashion with war. She was arrested in September 1944 by the Committee of Public Morals because of the rumors about her romantic relationship with a high ranking German officer. Soon after she was released, but shortly after that she left for Switzerland, where she stayed for almost ten years. Starting out: Coco Chanel was a well-known fashion designer in the 1920's. Chanel started out selling hats after opening her first shop on Paris’s Rue Cambon in 1910. She later opened stores in Deauville and Biarritz and started making clothes. Her career first started when she designed a dress out of an old jersey on a chilly day. Many people asked about where she got the dress, so she offered to make one for them. “My fortune is built on that old jersey that I’d put on because it was cold in Deauville,” she once said. significant impacts and
evolving fashion: Coco Chanel was a very influential fashion designer of the 20th Century, with an ever-lasting fashion legacy. She redefined style by saving women from unpractical clothing, and introducing them to elegant and comfortable clothing to fit their lifestyles. Chanel’s timeless fashions reflect social and political changes worldwide. She represented freedom and self-expression through her designs, and her influences continue to shape fashion today. People all over the world still enjoy her creations in fashion. The American Free Enterprise system needs business both large and small. Firms are one of the best job creators out there. Entrepreneurs are just the people needed for innovation. Good ideas or products are meaningless without an entrepreneur to take it to the market. In 1953 Chanel decided to reopen her salon the next year. She was more than seventy years old at that time. On February 5, 1954 she reopened her salon. The critics were ferocious. "A fiasco," was how the Daily Mail opened their story. Chanel was unchanged by the criticism. It took her three years to be number one again. “I don’t understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little – if only out of politeness. And then, you never know, maybe that’s the day she has a date with destiny. And it’s best to be as pretty as possible for destiny.” –Coco Chanel The popular fragrance, Chanel No. 5, got its name because the number five was Chanel’s lucky number. "Coco Chanel Biography."
