Debating the Law with the Law Giver
Mark 7:1-3
Cleansing
Corban
Conflict
Understand
The Mosaic Law commanded ceremonial cleansing rituals primarily for the Priests when they would enter the Temple for service.
This was not about being clean from germs but clean from sin.
“If you touch a reptile, you may not be dirty, but you are unclean. If you undergo a ritual immersion, you may not be free of dirt, but you are clean, A corpse can make you unclean, though it may not make you dirty. A rite of purification involving the sprinkling of water mixed with the ashes of a red heifer probably will not remove a great deal of dirt, but it will remove the impurity.”
Isaiah 29:13

“And the Lord said: "Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men”
They actually have an incredibly low view of the Word. They make it of no effect, void, and pointless.
A vow that committed something to be dedicated to God. Literally the word means 'offering'.

The authority of their tradition
The hypocrisy of their tradition
“Jesus accused the scribes of overthrowing a law of primary importance (the law to honor parents by caring for them in their old age) in order to observe one of secondary importance (the law of performing vows). Such a thing often results from extreme legalism."
The truth about their character
Romans 10:1-3

“1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. 2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.”
Deceived: They think they are right and this assurance is attractive to conscientious people

Deceivers: Try to convince others and this man made wisdom is attractive ‘build the fence higher!’

Destructive: Judge those who don’t agree and this is intimidating
The Truth and its Conquering Power
Rebels don't like authority
They reject true primacy
They are zealous
Wickedness is primarily in the heart of a man.

You act according to your nature.

The solution for your nature is not your work.

The solution for your nature is one who can make you be born again to a new nature, Jesus Christ.
Romans 10:4
"For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth."
