her real name is Catherine-Marie-Agnès Fal de Saint Phalle
Married Harry Matthews, an American author, in 1849
in 1956 she displayed her first exhibit, of a very naive-syle oil paint
1960, Harry and Niki separate, their two children live with their dad
1961 She begins her "shooting paintings"
1965 Inspired by the pregnancy of her friend Clarisse Rivers, she begins considering female figures in relation to her thinking on the position of women in society
1971 Niki marries fellow artist Jean Tinguely
died on May 21, 2002 at the age of 71 of emphysema in San Diego Similar Artists Similar Artists David Smith The Forest 1950 she was actually a model in 1948-to the mid 50's, before she became an artist. 1953, Niki is Hospitalized in Nice with a nervous breakdown and paints while recuperating from this crisis. She re-evaluates the direction of her life, critically deciding she wants to be an artist. Mentors & Inspirations 1954 she is introduced to American painter Hugh Weiss who becomes a friend and mentor, encouraging her to remain painting in her self-taught style
she discovers Antonio Gaudi and is deeply affected by this experience which opens many possibilities of the use of diverse material and objects as structural elements in sculpture and architecture
1959 Introduced to works by Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Raubert Raushenberg and Jasper Johns Movements And Styles Niki was Associated With Naive Art, which is very simple and childlike

It surprises you, it amazes you, and it makes you laugh or cry when you don't expect it." the Tarot Garden series In southern Tuscany, Niki created artworks reflecting her ideas about an open way of life, where each person contributes. These huge sculptures based on tarot cards, were started in the late 70s and stopped in 2002 when Niki died. The subject matter is a basketball player.
