Solving Equations
In order to do this, you must
remember your inverse
(or opposite) operations.
When solving an equation,
the goal is to get the
variable by itself.
Remember:
7 - x = -19
Steps:
1.) Begin getting x by itself by subtracting 7 from both sides.

7 - x = - 19
-7 -7
-x = -26
2.) We want to solve for x, not -x, so the last step is to divide both sides by -1.
-x = -26
____ ____
-1 -1
x = 26
2x - 5 = 11
Steps:
1.) Add 5 to both sides.
2x - 5 = 11
+5 +5
2x = 16
2.) Divide both sides by 2.
2x = 16
____ ____
2 2
x = 8
x + 3 = 8
___
5
1.) Subtract 3 from both sides.
x + 3 = 8
___
5
-3
-3
x = 5
___

2.) Multiply both sides by 5.
x = 5
___

.
x = 25
Important: What you do to one side of the equation, you must do to the other.
The opposite of addition is subtraction.
The opposite of subtraction is addition.
The opposite of multiplication is division.
