GREEK MYTHOLOGY Zeus-King of Gods; Ruler of Mount Olympus
Father of Olympian Gods and mankind
Father Cronos, mother Rhea
Sent Cronos to Tartarus Poseidon- God of Seas, horses and earthquakes
Older brother of Zeus
Father Cronos, mother Rhea
Easily angered, bad tempered Hades- Ruler of the Underworld and the dead
Oldest child of Cronos and Rhea
Didnt want to rule over the underworld, grudge against brothers.
Aphrodite- Goddess of love, beauty, and eternal youth
Was created from the foam of the crystal waters of Paphos when Titan Cronos slew his father

Mount Olympus- Where the major greek gods live
Sight of the throne of Zeus
Identified with Mt. Thessaly, but more so, identified as a mysterious region far above Heaven
Built by the Cyclops once freed by Zeus from Tartarus--in thanks they gave him his famous thunderbolts

Underworld- surrounded by series of rivers
Entranced by guardian Cerberus, three headed dog with snake tail and snake head protuding from his back

River of Acheron ( river of woe)
River of Cosytus (river of lamentation )
River of Phlegethon (river of fire )
River of Styx (river of unbreakable oaths by which the gods swear)
River of Lethe (river of forgetfulness)

Cyclops- cyclops are sons of uranus(sky) and gaia(earth).

Cyclops were one eyed monsters.

There was 3 cyclops: arges(thunderbolt), steropes(lighting), and brontes(thunder). They was the first smiths.

-when cronus came to power he imprisioned the cyclops in tartarus. They was released by zeus and fought with him against the titans,as a reward for their release the cyclops gave zeus his weapons of lighting and thunder. They continued as his workers at mount olymps forging his bolts.

Arges was killed by hermes while he guarded io for hera.

Apolio killed at least 1 of the cyclops to retrebution for zeus killing his son esculapius.
Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, war, the arts, industry, justice and skill.
She was the favorite child of Zeus
Father Zeus, Mother Metis
Born out of Zeus's skull Tartarus lowest region of the world
As far from Earth as Earth is from Heaven
Resembles Hell
Opposite of Elysium (afterlife for the blessed/heroes)
