5.06 World History

France had unsuccessfully attempted to invade Russia. After the war, France was very poor. This caused prices of bread to skyrocket.
The nobles and wealthy people had mistreated the commoners, putting heavy taxes on them and their land.
Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were found guilty of treason and guillotined on January 21st, 1793.This was after the monarchy was abolished by National Convention in September of 1792 (which made his position useless).
The Jacobins seized power shortly after the execution of the old monarch. They initiated a 10-month period of sentencing anyone they thought had committed treason to be guillotined. This became known as the Reign of Terror.
The citizens of France eventually stopped starving to death and the price of groceries was reasonable.
Event 2: better lives
Napoleon came to power, gaining much more revenue for France and did many good things to bring France out of recession.

The French Enlightenment caused many citizens to ditch the "old" government ideas of monarchy. This era allowed the ideas of natural rights to be used as propaganda against the Church and the monarch.
Cause 1: the Enlightenment
On July 14th, 1789, commoners marched into the royal Bastille, a prison that held 1 crazy man, 2 lunatics, and 4 cons. Their target: the large amount of gunpowder hidden in the building.
98 commoners and 1 defender of the Bastille had died.
After the Revolution of France, the monarchy was completely dissolved and France was declared a republic.
Event 1: the Storming of the Bastille.
Effect 1: France becomes a republic
Effect 3: Napoleon
Event 2: Execution of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette
Event 3: The Reign of Terror
Cause 2: War
Cause 3: The commoners
