Unleash your inner entrepreneur

BUSINESS students must unleash their entrepreneurial spirits in order to become successful entrepreneurs, said a business magnate.

"While its often very difficult to become an entrepreneur, you've got to have the entrepreneurial spirit, the desire within you to accomplish what you want to do. If you don't have it, nothing is going to happen, and no one's going to give it to you."

This was said by Dr Harry G Harris, the founder and president of HealthCare California, who is in Brunei this week to deliver several motivational talks.

About a 100 students in business and ICT courses packed the conference room at the ITB yesterday for Dr Harris, where his motivational talk provided the students with a ray of inspiration and a tremendous resource.

He urged the business students of ITB to take a huge leap, take risks and go for the money, and not settle for less.

"It is important for everyone to know in today's world that anything is possible. Brunei is part of the real world, and all the successes in the other parts of the world can happen right here in Brunei," he said.

He said that with the advancement in modern technology and with the governments around the world now introducing initiatives to support entrepreneurship within their respective countries, there has never been a greater time to 'start something big'.

"You have an outstanding country here and there are opportunities for everyone. You just need to take the necessary steps; gain the knowledge, have an entrepreneurial spirit and just go do it," he added. Dr Harris shared his thoughts and personal experiences relating to development of his business. His dynamic and energising speech encouraged the students of ITB to take the initiative in making a difference in their society and communities.

"Entrepreneurs all over the world share similar traits. Regardless of which side of the planet they are from, the spirit of entrepreneurship exists; vigorous, dynamic, passionate, creative, brightful and committed to success," he said.

He also said that everyone has an entrepreneurial spirit, whether young or old, or in any organisation, whether in the government or private sector or in a non-profit organisation or military.

"Each of us has the entrepreneurial spirit within us. It's how we really use it. At the end of the day, it's up to the individual to take the initiative," said Dr Harris, who had ventured into the startup scene after a long career in the US public sector.

Dr Harris also spoke of the ingredients necessary in an entrepreneur, including communication skills, organisational ability, dedication, vision, innovation, and being open-minded.

Addressing the subject of entrepreneurship, Dr Harris emphasised that the growth of small businesses is critical to a robust global economy and plays a key role in its recovery.

He said that small businesses are vital to spurring job growth and boosting innovation, and that an entrepreneur needs to be constantly innovative to stay ahead of the competition.
