is made entirely from one type of atom. Matter makes up every thing, Even me and you! The definition of matter is:
1.The substance or substances of which any physical object consists or is composed.

http://chemistry.about.com/library/blperiodictablekids.htm Examples of elements are : aluminum, hydrogen, calcium, mercury.These are elements, more elements can be found in the periodic table. Elements are different than compounds because an element is a pure substance, a compound is two or more elements put together to make something different. For example of what is matter, a book takes up space so it is matter but energy is not matter. Energy is nuclear, solar and wind energy etc. You can't see, feel or smell energy because it has no matter like I said before. How many elements are on the periodic table? There 118 elements on the periodic table. On the Periodic Table elements are arranged from left to right and from top to bottom in order of increasing atomic number or number of protons in the element. Rows of elements are called periods. Columns of elements help define element groups. Elements within a group share several common properties. There are 4 states of matter: solid, liquid, gas, and plasma.
Plasma is not any of the other 3 states (obviously) so it is hard to explain but if you know what lighting is ( I know you do) then you what plasma is. 99% of the universe is plasma! A solid is something that has a definite shape and volume such as: You, the desk,the floor and your pen or pencil. A liquid takes/becomes the shape of it's container and has definite volume. Some examples of liquids are: water, coke, milk and sprite. A gas has no definite shape or volume. Examples of a gases are: oxygen or carbon All matter is made up of element, for example water is made of two atoms hydrogen and one atom oxygen.
