It is called Mississippian because of the sequence in rock in Mississippi.
In the U.S they divided the Carboniferous in to two periods, the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian Periods.
The Mississippian rocks had a specific type of fossils inside the rock.
The rocks are above the rocks of the Devonian period and below the Pennsylvanian period.
The Mississippian Epoch, much of North America was covered by warm, shallow seas. The Pennsylvanian Period Lasted for 36 million years
There were coals found in rocks at that period
The Pennsylvanian period is mostly about coal but the Mississippian is more of limestone.
At that period of time, animals started to develop the amniote egg, which made them reproduce freely on land without the danger of drying out the embryo. It is called Carboniferous because of the deposits of coal. The deposits of coal occur throughout northern Europe, Asia, and midwestern and eastern North America.
The Carboniferous Period is famous for its swamp forests, such as the picture on the top left. These swamps produced the coal from which the term Carboniferous, or "carbon-bearing," is resulting.
The Carboniferous was humid and tropical than modern climate.
