Transcript of Bad Boy Intro w/ I Am Poem

Walter Dean Myers struggled with his identity throughout his childhood.
Bad Boy – Overview
Think about who you think you are. How do you define yourself as a person right now at this stage of your life?
Consider who you want to be. Are there any conflicts between who you are and who you want to be?
Are there any conflicts between who you are and who you think others expect you to be?
Now is your time to think about who you think you are. You are growing into the adult that you are going to become, and you will go through many changes to get there.

Who you are today will be different from who you are in a month…in a year…in five years….
Who do YOU think you are? Who do you think OTHERS think you are?
How does that make you feel?
Write those emotions into your I AM poem.
Use a strong writer's VOICE to put your personality into your poem.

Use effective WORD CHOICE to add specific details which spark your readers’ imaginations.
What is the difference between a memoir and an autobiography?

"A Place In This World"
Taylor Swift
This song is about self exploration and fitting 'in.'

What is the girl looking for?

How does she feel? Have you ever felt this way?

Where do you fit in?

"Dancing Nancies"
Dave Matthews Band
This song questions who am I and if you can or could have been someone else.

Can you answer these questions for yourself:

Who are you?
Who do you want to be?
Who could you be?
"Juke Box Hero"
This song is about one person's 'moment.' The moment in which he realizes what he wants to be.

Have you had your defining moment?

Do you know who you want to be?
"To all the teenagers: Start a band. Even if you suck. Play in your garage, your basement, or your living room. Play for 1 person, 50 people, or no people. Writing songs and playing music will teach you more about who you are than any video game, mtv show, or the internet ever will."

Mrs. Foster’s I Am Poem

I am genuine and bold.
I wonder what it means to be a writer.
I hear the sounds of characters in my head.
I see myself writing a novel one day.
I want to live on an island someday.
I am genuine and bold.

I pretend that I'm a rock star in front of the mirror.
I feel deflated when I remember that I’m not that good lookin'.
I touch my husband’s hand and I know that everything is going to be okay.
I worry about my children finding their own paths in this world.
I cry whenever I am frustrated or angry.
I am genuine and bold.

I understand that being unique is the best thing to be, and
I say you should always be true to yourself.
I dream that I’m a best-selling novelist.
I try to live life as an individual.
I hope my children are proud of me.
I am genuine and bold.
