Stalin and& the Communists Stalin and the communist Rise to power Life after the war How did Stalin get so much power? Vladimir Lenin dies in 1924 which leaves the spot of leadership up for grabs. Stalin became a single power by isolating the relationships between those who opposed him. Joseph Stalin He killed 20 million of his own people The man of Steel Stalin During WWII Stalin made a nonaggresion act with Germany in 1939 In 1941, Hitler broke the pact by invading the USSR In 1944, the soviet union starts a counteroffensive 35 million soviet soldiers died in the war Stalin was Stalin After WWII Th The Great Purge The Great Purge During the years leading up to WWII, Stalin took out his political opponents by killing them or sending them to gulag labor camps Stalin takes control of the Soviet Union Stalingrad Germany launches operation Barbarossa The largest military operation in human history Germany sends 4 million troops into Russia Germany plows through Russia, taking many victories, until they reach Stalingrad Stalin gears up for one of the biggest battles in world history Germany begins battle in the late Summer of 1942 Germany destroys Russia's food supply on the way to Moscow Germany begins the assault by bombing Stalingrad (with the Luftwaffe), destroying most of the city By November, Germany has captured 90% of Stalingrad. Stalin orders a counterattack to fight the germans! During Winter, the germans are underprepared for the freezing weather, and are tired from previous battles It is because of these conditions that Russians retake Stalingrad. Although Russia holds out, the caualties are staggering.

800,000 Germans died in battle Although they took heavy losses, Stalin and the Soviets won the battle. The offensive started in 1944 and ended on May 2nd, 1945 with the surrender of Berlin They are at an advandage because they are used to the harsh cold Results of the War During Stalin's reign of power it is estimated that he killed 20 million of his own people. He killed them in multiple ways including:

labor camps
