"As you go, make this proclamation: 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.'...Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give...Do not take gold...or a second tunic, or sandals, or a walking stick...Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves"

- Frances hears this proclamation during a sermon on Saint Matthew's Day (1209) at the Church of San Damaino
