Why is debriefing important?

Types of Debriefing
Characteristics - calm, open, encouraging
Function - setting expectations, keeping the discussion on track, and summarizing
Three main types of debriefing questions
Clarifying - Help me understand what was happening here, what did you notice
Leading - What were you considering here, What would you have done if...
Exploring - How were you feeling? Has this happened before? How would you apply this?
Typical debriefing format
Defuse - get initial reactions, allow learners to unload, opens them up for discussion and eliminates barriers to learning
Summarize - 'take home messages' 'facts to die for' 'what did you learn' ...about yourself, your team, your patients, your hospital...
Recipes for success
Ask what learners were seeing/thinking as this may not be known to the team or facilitator (i.e. they may have been right)
5% Rule - keep the fact that there is a 5% chance that you could be wrong in the back of your mind when clarifying
Don't lecture
Gently engage silent participants
If learners take three lessons from the simulation, the session was a success
Lessons may not always be on the objectives list (adapt to the situation)
