Why is it important
to criticize a group?
Outgroup critics are devaluated more than ingroup critics. Instead of actually listening, the ingroup bluntly rejects what is being said.
" The Intergroup Sensitivity Effect" (Hornsey, 2002)
Why? Critics face a mistrust of their motives. The position of the critic subconsciously startles the questions about the speaker's intention.
How can we overcome this defensiveness?
1) It is not enough to be right!
2) Be aware of the minefield of psychological variables that make up „who you are“ to others:
- Your group membership
- Your history
- The intergroup context
Criticism is a catalyst for social change, growth and innovation!
Without it, decision-making processes become stagnant and immature. We cannot correct suboptimal behavior and attitudes. Our blindspots and biases grow.
But why is it so difficult
to criticize from the outside?
"It's okay if we say it,
but don't you dare say that about us!"
"What do you care about our problems?"
Use inclusive language.
Do not stress your expert status.
Acknowledge your own group's failings.
Avoid the sandwich feedback method with outgroups.
Active a shared superordinate group.
Raise awareness of each group's...

between in- and outgroup critic is not so clear?
2) What happens when we stress the diversity of the group that is being criticized?
- Australia's multicultural society provided a perfect set-up (first and second generation immigrants of Japanese and British heritage)
Diversity triggers the critics to be liked better,
to agreed with more, and to elicit less sensitivity.
