Discover with me.. Does Music Affect the Human Heart Rate? Why? The Experiment
After thinking about what to do, I decide to set up an experiment.. Experiment Preparation I will take three test subjects into one, isolated room. Why did I wonder if music affects the heart rate? When people listen to a certain genre of music, it's usually to get a certain emotion, and certain emotions can contribute to your heart rate. So maybe music contributes to your heart rate?... I'll play different genres of music & see how it affects the heart rate of different people. I'll see if pulse plays a factor in how you feel when you listen to music. Hypothesis: If loud or soft music is played, then your heart will speed up or slow down depending on the energy of the piece. Purpose: To see if different music affects the heart rate. The purpose of this was intended to benefit others by showing them what music does to the body, educating them so maybe they will have a better understanding of music and it's affects on their body. I collected all of the genres of music I intended on using and made it so it is playing constantly to avoid biased results from silence. I made sure that the location where the experiment takes place has no outside noises or distractions for the test subjects. I make sure I have all of the materials I need before I start.. *Blood Pressure Machine

*Timer Experiment Time I will then play a single genre of music for one hour and record every test subject's pulse every fifteen minutes for that hour. I researched before anything and collected information from trusted resources. What will happen: I will test four genres of music from different ends of the music world : *Rap
*Heavy Metal
*Classical (Mozart Era)
*Techno - Music will be spaced out over time to avoid biased answers between different genres. I will record all of my results on a line graph. By the mid point of our time period, all of our test subject's pulse is noticeably greater then it was to begin with at our control point. Subject A increases pulse rate after the first fifteen minutes and stays constant through the rest of the time period. Subject B drops pulse rate after the first fifteen minutes, but then fluctuates up and back down before the end of the time period. Let's see our results.. By the end of our time period, it is obvious that all pulse's are significantly dropped, at a calmer level compared to the subject's starting pulse. Subject A decreases pulse rate slightly at every check point during our time period. Subject B increases pulse rate at a small amount in the first fifteen minute check point, but then decreases after every check point to the end. Subject C decreases pulse rate at a steady rate, then keeps constant from the forty five minute mark to the end. By the end of our time period, all pulse's are higher then what they started out as. Subject A rapidly increases pulse rate by the first fifteen minute mark, then stays almost constant the rest of the time period. Subject B rapidly increases pulse rate by the first fifteen minute mark, then also stays pretty constant for the remainder of the time. Subject C drops pulse rate slightly by the fifteen minute mark, then climbs back up nearly to where it began by the thirty minute mark, staying pretty constant for the remainder of the time. All subjects pulse rate's are nearly the same by the end of the time period as before beginning, but change slightly through the hour. Subject A pulse rate changes very slightly by the fifteen minute mark, stays constant at the thirty minute mark, then by the sixty min. mark, pulse rate goes back down. Subject B pulse rate drops quickly by the fifteen min. mark, stays pretty constant through thirty and forty five min. mark, then inclines quickly by the end. Subject C slightly increases pulse rate every check point. Conclusion : Music does affect the heart rate. It is obvious when calmer music is played, the pulse rate drops. Then, when harder music is played, the pulse rate increases. Music plays a factor in, not only our emotions, but our heart rate too! So, next time you listen to your favorite song, remember it's probably impacting you in more then one way. Listen with your heart!
