Samantha's Poem
"Where does that sister of mine get her crazy courage? As she was marching down the hall, a voice from one of the cells they passed called out Mariposa does not belong to herself. Then everybody was beating on the bars calling out "Viva la Mariposa" Tears came to my eyes something big and powerful spread its wings inside me. Courage I told myself and this time I felt it (Alvarez 382).

Lexi's Poem
"And that's how I got free. I don't mean just going to sleepaway school with a trunk full of new things I mean in my head after i got to Inmaculada and met Sinita and saw what happened to Lna and realized that i had just left a small cage to go into an even bigger one the size of our whole country (Alvarez 13)

In the shadow of the grave
I will be brave;
I'll smile,- I know I will
E'er I be still;
Because I will not smile
So long a while.

But I'll be sad, I fear,
And shed a tear,
For those I love and leave
My loss to grieve:
'Tis just their grief I'll grieve,
Believe, believe.

Not for myself I care
As forth I fare;
But for those left behind
Wae is my mind
Knowing how they will miss
My careless kiss.

Oh I'll be brave when I
Shall come to die;
With courage I will quaff
The Cup and laugh,
Aye, even mock at Death
With failing breath.

It is not those who go
Who suffer woe;
But stricken ones who bide
By cold bedside:
God comfort you who keep
Watch by my sleep!

A sacrifice you make today
Will never ever be gone
A sacrifice you make today
Will soon be passed on

A sacrifice you make today
Will stay in many hearts
A sacrifice you make today
Help many play their parts

A sacrifice you make today
Will never be forgotten
A sacrifice you make today
Will never be mistaken

A sacrifice you make today
May even change history
A sacrifice you make today
May be kept in someone’s memory

A sacrifice you make today
Might light someone’s day up
A sacrifice you make today
Might fill someone’s dry cup

A sacrifice you make today
Will always be treasured
A sacrifice you make today
Will always be remembered

It is in the small things we see it.
The child's first step,
as awesome as an earthquake.
The first time you rode a bike,
wallowing up the sidewalk.
The first spanking when your heart
went on a journey all alone.
When they called you crybaby
or poor or fatty or crazy
and made you into an alien,
you drank their acid
and concealed it.

Later,
if you faced the death of bombs and bullets
you did not do it with a banner,
you did it with only a hat to
cover your heart.
You did not fondle the weakness inside you
though it was there.
Your courage was a small coal
that you kept swallowing.
If your buddy saved you
and died himself in so doing,
then his courage was not courage,
it was love; love as simple as shaving soap.
Later,
if you have endured a great despair,
then you did it alone,
getting a transfusion from the fire,
picking the scabs off your heart,
then wringing it out like a sock.
Next, my kinsman, you powdered your sorrow,
you gave it a back rub
and then you covered it with a blanket
and after it had slept a while
it woke to the wings of the roses
and was transformed.

Later,
when you face old age and its natural conclusion
your courage will still be shown in the little ways,
each spring will be a sword you'll sharpen,
those you love will live in a fever of love,
and you'll bargain with the calendar
and at the last moment
when death opens the back door
you'll put on your carpet slippers
and stride out.

My girls will always come first.
Though Papa has made some mistakes about his family, he has always done what he thought was best for his daughters. Papa didn't like watching his "little chickens" grow up and leave him but he knew they had to. He may not have put certain family members first such as his wife, but he wouldn't do anything to ever hurt his daughters.
