Main Idea
versus
Summary

Maid Idea versus Summary:

These two concepts are related, but readers should understand some key differences between them.
Main Idea:

the point about a topic the author makes. The main idea is "held up" by supporting details.
The main idea is either explicitly included as a topic sentence, or it is implied by the author and inferred by the reader.
Main Idea is expressed as a sentence and should

not
include the

supporting details
.
Main Idea Formula:
Topic
+
Author's Point About The Topic
= Main Idea
Summary:

a brief restatement of the main idea(s) and the most important supporting details.
A summary should be much
shorter
than the original material and should be written in the
reader's words.
