A devastating earthquake has hit Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, is in the south-central part of the state on the Cook Inlet. The earthquake's epicenter was about 12.4 miles (20 km) north of Prince William Sound, which was 78 miles (125 km) east of Anchorage and 40 miles (64 km) west of Valdez. The focus was approximately as deep as 15.5 miles (25 km). The earthquake had a devastating 9.2 magnitude while the max is 10 magnitude. This great earthquake and ensuing tsunami took 131 lives (tsunami 122, earthquake 9), and caused about $2.3 billion in property loss. The earthquake caused ground fissures, collapsing structures, and tsunamis. The earthquake has been recorded as the most powerful recorded in North American history, and the second most powerful recorded in world history.Imagine having that type of earthquake for 4.5 minutes, this sure is catastrophic.
