1984- Characterization
Big Brother
Big Brother
Indirect: Big Brother is the all knowing always watching protective figure. He is the only figure Oceania knows. They will do whatever they can to fulfill his needs and to carryout his demands successfully. They won't even think about overthrowing this organization because they believe that they are living better lives than those in the past.
Direct: pg.5 "It depicted simply an enormous face, more than a meter wide: the face of a man of about forty-five, with a heavy black mustache and ruggedly handsome features."
O'Brien
O'brien
Indirect: O'Brien is the man that is supposedly going to be there to help you with whatever it is you need help with. Even while he is torturing Winston, bringing him great physical and mental pain, he is still portraying himself as the overlooker and protector of Winston. He does this so successfully that Winston actually believes him. Direct: pg. 13 "O'Brien was a large, burly man with a thick neck and a coarse, humorous brutal face. In spite of his formidable appearance he had a certain charm of manner."
Winston
Direct: -Male in his late thirties
-Has a varicose ulcer
pg. 5 "And Winston, who was thirty-nine, and had a varicose ulcer above his right ankle, went slowly, resting several times on the way."
Indirect: Winston is someone that doesn't like the position that they are in, but does the little things to get by. He stands behind his actions until they are completed. He is very determined to carryout the task at hand, but can get to caught up in the objective. This can cause carelessness. He is very observant of his surroundings when he needs to be, which is almost throughout the whole story.
