Nujood's Parents
Despite Nujood and her older sister, Mona both being raped and the international attention and criticism the family received, they have not changed their way of thinking and have arranged a marriage for Nujood's younger sister, Haifa.
Khardji is at the end of the valley. It was only five little stone houses without any grocery store, garage, barber, city hall, or even a mosque.
In Arabic "Khardji" means outside.
Most geographers do not bother to put it on a map.
Khardji is located in the valley of Wadi La'a, in the northern Yemeni province of Hajja.
There was no electricity and no running water.
Nujood's family lived in the ground floor of a slum building on a garbage strewn alley in the neighborhood of Al-Qa.
Sana'a is very hot and crowded.
-Nujood's family flees to Sana'a.
-Nujood's parents tell her that she is going to be married.
-Nujood's new family puts her to work and treats her harshly and her husband breaks his promise not to touch her until she is older and rapes her.
-She begs her parents to let her divorce him, and when they refuse, she takes matters into her own hands and goes to the courthouse alone.
-She is granted a divorce with the help of her lawyer, Shada Nasser.
-She was able to go back to school and she dreams of becoming a lawyer to help other girls get better lives.
The theme of the story is that sometimes you will be the only person who can change something that you think is wrong. You have to have the courage to speak out and try to change it.
-The main conflict of the story is Nujood's fight to be free from her abusive marriage.
-Nujood is fighting against her father and her husband so it is a man vs.man conflict.
-The novel is very well written and describes in great detail how Nujood feels about the events of her life. The reader begins to feel an emotional attachment to Nujood and begin to think of her as their own sister, daughter or friend.
-The only weakness of the story is how Nujood's brother,Fares, ran away to Saudi Arabia. This was mentioned several times, but feels very rushed and brushed over.
I am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced shows a reality that everyone should know about, but no one wants to discuss. The novel should be read by everyone so that we are all informed of a harsh reality that millions of girls face and work towards ending it.
Nujood received her divorce on the condition that he would be paid back the bride price. He was paid 50,000 rials (about 250 dollars).
