Blessing most likely one of the last sacraments one will receive
often administered near the time of death to bring spiritual and even physical strength during an illness. "It brings Christ's compassionate loving
to bear on those suffering serious sickness" (cf. CCC 1499) "healing"
- not cure nor the eradication of the disease or defect
- rather holistic care that touches the body, soil, and spirit
- process by which persons are helped to realize their full potential
before God and their fellow men and women

The Sacrament may be repeated if the sick person recovers after being anointed and then again falls ill or if during the same illness the person’s condition becomes more serious.
A sick person may be anointed before surgery whenever a serious illness is the reason for the surgery.
Elderly people may be anointed if they have become noticeably weakened even though no serious illness is present.
Sick children may be anointed if they have sufficient use of reason to be strengthened by this sacrament. Those who satisfy three conditions may be anointed:
A baptized Catholic,
Reached the age of reason,
Begun to be in danger from illness or the infirmities of age, or have become sick again or underwent a further crisis. It should be noted that the danger need only have begun to exist. The person does not have to be "in extremis" (in imminent danger of dying). This is a change from the pastoral practice before the Second Vatican Council. Matter:
Oil (usually olive oil blessed by a bishop, but in an emergency, any vegetable oil will suffice)
- Done by the bishop on (or near) Holy Thursday at the Chrism
- In extraordinary circumstances, a priest can also perform the
blessing of oil within the rite of anointing.
Laying on of hands by the celebrant Form:
The essential rite of the sacrament consists in the priest/bishop (or priests, in the case of the Eastern Churches) laying hands on the sick, anointing him with blessed oil, and praying:
When circumstances permit, the Church recommends that the sacrament take place during Mass, or at least that it be preceded by Confession and followed by Holy Communion. "Through this holy anointing, may the Lord in His love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up." In common with all the sacraments, Anointing of the Sick confers sanctifying grace.
It is an increase in sanctifying grace that Anointing of the Sick gives, since it presupposes that the recipient already is free from mortal sin. Thus there is intensified in the soul that supernatural life, that oneness with God, which is the source of all spiritual strength as it is also the measure of our capacity for the happiness of heaven.
The primary purpose of the special grace of Anointing of the Sick is to comfort and to strengthen the soul of the sick person.
• This is the grace that quiets anxiety and dissipates fear.
• It is the grace which enables the sick person to embrace God's will and to face the possibility of death without apprehension.
• It is the grace which gives the soul the strength to face and conquer whatever temptations to doubt, despondency, or even despair may mark Satan's last effort to seize this soul for himself. from CCC 1532: • the uniting of the sick person to the passion of Christ, for his own good and that of the whole Church;
• the strengthening, peace, and courage to endure in a Christian manner the sufferings of illness or old age;
• the forgiveness of sins, if the sick person was not able to obtain it through the sacrament of Penance;
• the restoration of health, if it is conducive to the salvation of his soul;
