How important is sleep to your physical health?
weight gain and bad sleep have been linked together

those who sleep less than 6 hrs on average are much more likely to have excess body weight than those who sleep an average of 8 hrs

sleep regulates metabolism and appetite by secreting hormones, and the balance of these hormones are upset when you sleep less

less sleep increases release of insulin, which regulates glucose processing, and promotes fat storage
According to
Sleep and Dreaming
by Marvin Rosen, at least half of Americans mismanage their sleep to the point of seriously affecting their health

Average of 6 hours of sleep is associated with an increased risk of heart attacks and heart disease

Studies have shown that less than an average of 5 hrs of sleep increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes

As your blood pressure rises it becomes more difficult to get restful sleep
Long term Illness
According to healthysleep.med.harvard.edu, if one sleeps less than an average of 8 hours a night, they are 3 times more likely to develop colds

sleep deprivation suppresses immune system function, to the point where it is much more difficult for your body fight off viruses, making you much more susceptible to colds and viruses.
Short term Illness
less sleeps leads to the increased production of cortisol, also known as the stress hormone

In studies, subjects sleeping an average of 4.5 hours showed declining levels of optimism ans sociality
