Creative Writing Midterm The speaker has tension with himself. Also there is tension with the speaker and the ocean he is about to drive in to. At the end of each verse he notes how far away he is from drowning in the ocean. Tension And I got this black suit on
Roaming around like I'm ready for a funeral
One more mile till the road runs out

I, I'm about to drive in the ocean
I'ma try to swim from something bigger than me
Kick off my shoes and swim good and swim good
Take off this suit and swim good and swim good, good

I'm going off, don't try stopping me
I'm going off, don't try saving
No flares, no vest, no fear
Waves are washing me

I, I'm about to drive in the ocean
I'ma try to swim from something bigger than me
Kick off my shoes and swim good and swim good
Take off this suit and swim good and swim good, good that try to chase these shots with flavors that not even as sweet as her. My ambitious girl, I wont forget you,I just reflect on how I aint met you, yet boo. You somewhere, getting your life in order. so for the time being, i hope this might support her. Support her, or work her, she worth it. Go girl X3, ambition. see, I like the person that you are,but I'm in love with the person that you have potential to be. and all your dreams sharing with me and your secrets baring with me and the flaws, you aint even got to mention to me,ambitious girl, you just wanna win, and you'd rather chase your dreams, then to try to chase these men. that try to chase these skirts I wanna see something else in you before I invest in you ambitious girl, (what you sitting for)I'd rather you tell me to hit you later, because you gotta finish a paper then to be in my face asking for a rosea cup. see these bxtches can't cut in yo business I'm in love with your business and your productivity is the reason I in trest, ambitious girl The song is structured like a normal r&b song. 2 verses with hooks in between. Structure Again, The “black suit” he keeps talking about is a symbol for his old self. Also his “shoes” which are holding him back from “swimming good” (Living good). Symbolism The entire song is an extended metaphor.
The “black suit” he keeps talking about is a metaphor for his old self. Also his “shoes” which are holding him back from “swimming good” (Living good).
“I'm about to drive in the ocean. Imma try to swim from something bigger than me. Kick off my shoes and swim good. Take off this suit. And swim good”.
Also ‘’now i'm driving round on the boulevard trunk bleeding and everytime the cops pull me over they don't ever see them’’ is a metaphor for him saying he is living with all these problems and no one ever notices. Metaphor The only repetition in the song is the end of the verses when he states the distance between him and the ocean. Also the hook. “Swim Good, Swim Good” Repetition The word choice was relatively simple on the song. Word Choice The tone of the song is almost emotionally drained. The speaker is talking about driving his car into the ocean and is spilling his emotions on the song. Tone The speaker is telling a story as it happens.
He is the main character of the story and is telling it in the 1st person Speaker Frank Ocean is a r&b artist signed to Island Def Jam Music Group
He released his Debut free mixtape/ album in 2010 “Nostalgia, Ultra” to critical acclaim.
Ocean’s two most recognizable songs are “Novacane” and “Thinkin’ bout You”
Frank Ocean’s “Nostalgia, Ultra” was heavily influenced by Kanye West’s 808s and Heartbreak.
Ocean's early career was as a ghostwriter for artists such as Brandy, Justin Bieber, and John Legend. Author hat's a pretty big trunk on my Lincoln town car, ain't it?
Big enough to take these broken hearts and put 'em in it
Now I'm driving 'round on the boulevard trunk bleeding
And every time the cops pull me over
They don't ever see them, they never see them

And I've got this black suit on
Roaming around like I'm ready for a funeral
Five more miles till the road runs out

I'm about to drive in the ocean
I'ma try to swim from something bigger than me
Kick off my shoes and swim good and swim good
Take off this suit and swim good and swim good, good

Got some pretty good beats on this 808 CD, yeah
Memory seats I'm sitting on stay heated
I would've put tints on my windows but what's the difference?
When I feel like a ghost, no Shwayze, ever since I lost my baby Swim Good I picked this poem because I think that it is very unique and creative that a rapper would put a poem in a mixtape.
It is also one of my favorite tracks recorded by Wale. Personal Response At the end of the song he repeats the words, “Go Girl” and “Ambition”
I think he does this to set the mood and tone of the poem more. Repetition The entire poem he creates an image of this “ambitious girl”.
“I'd rather you tell me to hit you later, because you gotta finish a paper. then to be in my face asking for a rosea cup”
“ambitious girl, you just wanna win, and you'd rather chase your dreams, then to try to chase these men” Imagery Wale used pretty simple vocabulary.
Although the words aren't very sophisticated he still used them in a interesting way. Word Choice This is in 1st person.
Wale is speaking as himself. He refers to himself in the 1st. Speaker The conflict is that he has not met his “ambitious girl”.
He solves it by dealing with the fact that his girl is currently out following her dreams Tension The tone in this piece is kind of flirtatious, yet admiring. It starts off as flirtatious and develops into Wale going into how he admires this “ambitious girl”.
His 1st line was “Ambitious girl, the drive-drive me crazy. I'm tryna stay with you, lay with you. I'll pay you tuition, pray with you if you aint intuition”
His last line was “I just reflect on how I aint met you, yet boo. You somewhere, getting your life in order. So for the time being, i hope this might support her”. Tone This was written by Rapper/Poet Wale.
He is best known for his work with Rick Ross’ rap label/group called MMG.
This poem is from the 2nd installment of the (Mixtape About Nothing) Series called More About Nothing.
Ambition is a common theme in Wale’s music.
His debut album was called “Ambition” Author Ambitious girl, the drive-drive me crazy. I'm tryna stay with you, lay with you I'll pay you tuition, pray with you if you aint intuition. I'm tryna fxck the shxt out your aspirations. See, the last one I dated, I hated we wake up, i go to work, she leave outcome back with some make up, high heels, and a purse, or worse i ask, "Baby girl, what you aspire to be?"she reply to me like, "why you perspiring me?" bxtch..pardon me if I'm sweating you but, Ambitious Girl - Wale This is one of my favorite songs. It is my favorite song by frank ocean. Personal Response He paints the setting out perfectly so you can picture it inside your head.
“That's a pretty big trunk on my Lincoln town car, ain't it?
Big enough to take these broken hearts and put 'em in it
Now I'm driving 'round on the boulevard, trunk bleeding
And everytime the cops pull me over, they don't ever see them
And I've got this black suit on
Roaming around like I'm ready for a funeral
Five more miles 'til the road runs out”
This perfectly lays the setting out Imagery By Mike Snell
